Cooper, Sidney (1874-1935)

Sidney Cooper was an assistant superintendent for the Hudson’s Bay Company store in Vancouver. He lived at 1905 Beach Avenue in 1919.

Sidney was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, on January 18, 1874. His father was John Hanks Cooper (1843-1921), an auctioneer, upholsterer, cabinet maker and undertaker, who was also the mayor of Gravesend, probably in 1889 and 1901.

Sidney’s mother was Annie Scott, who was born in Ashford, Kent, England.

In 1900, in Gravesend, Sidney married Chrystabel Jane Smith. She was born in Gravesend in 1875. This marriage ended in divorce sometime before 1915.

Sidney arrived in Canada about 1909. He was in Vancouver by 1911, where he was the secretary-treasurer of the Grand Trunk B.C. Coal Company. He was a lodger at 847 Seymour Street.

By 1913, he was an accountant with Coquitlam Terminal Company, and was living at 676 Thurlow Street.

On May 15, 1915, in Victoria, British Columbia, Sidney married Lilian Carr. She was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, on November 11, 1874. Her father was George Henry Carr, who was a ship broker. Her mother was Caroline Barnes.

In 1916 and 1917, Sidney was working for the Hudson’s Bay Company. The Vancouver directory gave his address as number 27 in the Felix Apartments at 610 Jervis Street.

He did not appear in the Vancouver directory in 1918. By 1919, he was at 1905 Beach Avenue, and was working as an assistant superintendent for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

By 1920, he had moved to Victoria, where he was working for David Spencer’s department store. He was living at 2079 Crescent Road in Oak Bay.

By 1922, Sidney was a floor walker for David Spencer Ltd., and was living at 1118 Douglas Street in Victoria. He worked for David Spencer Ltd. for the rest of his working career.

In 1923, Sidney and Lilian moved to 1940 Crescent Road. In 1929, they moved to 425 St. Charles Street, where they continued to live for the rest of their lives.

Lilian died in Victoria on July 28, 1933. She was buried at sea.

Sidney died in Victoria on August 12, 1935.

Sidney and Lilian had a daughter.

Noreen Cooper was born in Vancouver on May 22, 1917.

On June 1, 1941, in London, England, she married Geoffrey Corrie Barron (1914-2004).
