Matilda Sophia Hastings was the widow of Captain Joseph Buckley Hastings. She lived at 1890 Georgia Street from 1905 to 1908.

Matilda Sophia Hastings was born Matilda Sophia Croker in Ireland on May 29, 1856. Her parents were John Wilson Croker (1834-1903) and Rebecca Franklin (1838-1907).

Life after Marriage

Joseph and Matilda remained in England until about 1883.

By 1891, they were in Owen Sound, Ontario, where they lived until 1898. During this period, Joseph sailed on many vessels. In 1891, he was the captain on the S.S. Charles W. Wetmore, a whale-back steel steamer, on a voyage around the southern tip of South America to Washington State.

Arrival in Vancouver

Joseph Hastings first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1899. He was living at 651 Barnard Street, along with other members of the Hastings family. (In 1911, “Barnard Street” became “Union Street.”)

After the Hastings family arrived in Vancouver, Joseph continued to sail on Pacific coast vessels.

 

Joseph Hastings Lost at Sea

In 1901, Joseph was a first mate on the collier Mattaeawan, which transported coal from Nanaimo to San Francisco.

The ship was originally called the Asturian Prince. In 1896, it became the Matteawan.

During the Spanish-American war it was a troop ship.

In December 1901, the Matteawan was carrying a load of coal from Nanaimo to San Francisco when it disappeared during a fierce storm off the coast of Cape Flattery. After the ship went down, there was no sign of Joseph.

Matilda’s Later Life

After the loss of the Matteawan, Matilda continued to live in Vancouver. Generally she lived with other family members, particularly her daughter, Marion, who was married to Captain Alfred James Hailey.

Matilda died in Vancouver on February 25, 1924. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

George and Beatrice lived in Seattle, Washington.

Beatrice died in Bremerton, Washington on May 9, 1920.

On December 16, 1921, in Seattle, George married Marion (“Minnie”) Belle Keas. She was born in Kansas on September 29, 1894.

In 1930 and 1940, George and Minnie lived in Bremerton.

George died in Santa Clara, California on March 17, 1963.

Minnie died in Santa Clara on February 12, 1975.

Marion Lucy Hastings

Marion Lucy Hastings was born in Owen Sound, Ontario on November 15, 1884.

On August 16, 1910, in Vancouver, she married Alfred James Hailey, who was a master mariner. He was born in Bradford, England on October 18 1874. His parents were David Trail Hailey and Elizabeth Rhodes.

Alfred died in Vancouver on July 15, 1958. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Marion died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on April 1, 1975. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Christine Gatt Hastings

Christine Gatt Hastings was born in Owen Sound, Ontario on November 21, 1886.

On February 19, 1919, in Vancouver, she married William George Bender, who was the manager of a real estate business. He was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 4, 1876. His parents were Charles Bender and Anna Louise Heintzman.

William and Christina went to live in Seattle, Washington. William applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1930, William and Christina were living in Seattle.

William died in San Francisco, California on November 24, 1934.

Christina later moved to Vancouver. In 1946 she was the secretary to the registrar of the British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Until 1957, she lived at number 43, 1601 Comox Street. She later lived at number 101, 1840 Robson Street.

Christina died in Vancouver on November 19, 1968. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
