John Spottiswood Tait was the manager of Crawford and Stuart, a firm that supplied fishing nets, rope and twine, oil clothing and rubber boots. He lived at 1932 Alberni Street in 1904 and 1905.

John was born in Portobello, a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland, on June 6, 1875. His father was James Tait (1815-1888).

John’s mother was Annie Shaw Trotter (1846-1925).

John went to school in Edinburgh. Later he worked as a shipping clerk in Leith, Scotland.

He travelled to Vancouver in 1897. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1898. He was the manager of Crawford and Stewart, and he was living at 817 Georgia Street.

In 1898 he joined the militia. He became a lieutenant in the Garrison Artillery, which later became the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles. In 1902 he became a captain.

On November 19, 1902, John married Lilian Nelson Moore. She was born in California on August 22, 1879. Her parents were Robert Moore (1837-1896) and Frances Amelia Pidwell (1844-1896).

John and Lilian appeared in the Vancouver society directories in 1908 and 1914.

By 1909, John had his own business, J.S. Tait and Company, which was a firm of commission merchants and importers.

During the First World War, John served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was seriously wounded in Europe, and he was taken to England to recover.

He later returned to Canada, where he resumed his importing and sales business.

In 1919 he purchased the Vancouver Pipe and Foundry Company. The British Columbia provincial government loaned him $30,000 to help fund the purchase.

He became the president of Tait Pipe and Foundry Company Limited, which was the successor to Vancouver Pipe and Foundry Company.

John and Lilian continued to live in Vancouver until the 1950s.

John died in Vancouver on July 18, 1951. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Lilian died in Vancouver on March 30, 1955. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

John and Lilian had the following children.

 

John Moore Spottiswood Tait (known as “Ian”)

John Moore Spottiswood Tait was born in Vancouver on December 1, 1904 (some sources say 1903). He was often called “Ian.”

He worked in his father’s manufacturing and importing businesses.

On September 19, 1933, in Vancouver, he married Dorothy Belle Miller, who was a registered nurse. She was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on April 6, 1907. Her parents were Richard Wallace Miller and Rhoda Tingle.

John died in Vancouver on July 4, 1951. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Dorothy died in Vancouver on May 7, 1955. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Lilian Frances Anne Tait

Lilian Frances Anne Tait was born in British Columbia in October 1907. (She was often called “Fanta.”)

She lived with her parents until at least 1945.

She served as a member of the WRENS (Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service) for 12 years.

She married Daniel Maclean, who was a lawyer. He was born on February 4, 1896, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her parents were Daniel Maclean and Laurie Evelyn Park.

Daniel died in Vancouver on June 2, 1979.

Lilian’s second husband was David Robertson Verchère, who was a lawyer and judge. He was born in Ayr, Waterloo County, Ontario. His parents were Arthur Gaillaird Verchère (1867-1932) and Emilie Hargitt (1868-1947). David died in Vancouver on October 5, 1989.

Lilian died on August 29, 2003.

Died peacefully on August 29, 2003, at the age of 96. Predeceased by her brother Ian Tait, her nephew Wallace Tait, first husband Daniel Maclean and second husband Hon. David R. Verchere. She is survived by her grand-nieces Fanta Tait and Andrea Tait, and grand-nephews Ian Tait and Christopher Tait. Fanta served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Services for 12 proud years. She was a sparkling conversationalist loved by family and friends of all ages. She will be remembered for her grace and enduring elegance. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 3 pm at St. Paul’s Church, 1130 Lewis [sic: Jervis] Street, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Arthritis Society would be appreciated.”
