Bull, Richard Strachan (1868-1948)

Richard Strachan Bull was a hardware salesman and manager, first for the firm of Wood, Vallance and Leggatt, and later for a series of other hardware businesses. He lived at 1919 Beach Avenue in 1903, at 1913 Beach Avenue from 1907 to 1908, and at 2044 Comox Street in 1909.

Richard was born in Hamilton, Ontario on February 11, 1868. His father was George Armstrong Bull (1828-1909), who was a clergyman. George’s father was George Perkins Bull (1795-1847), who was a printer and newspaper man.

Bishop Strachan ordained George Armstrong Bull as an Anglican priest, which perhaps accounts for Richard’s middle name of “Strachan.”

Richard’s mother was Eleanor Farmer (1851-1923).

By 1891, Richard was living in Hamilton with his brother, Harcourt Edward Orton Bull (1866-1959); both were hardware salesmen, possibly with Wood, Vallance and Company, a large firm of hardware merchants in Hamilton.

In 1901, Richard was living in Vernon, British Columbia and was working as the proprietor of the Vernon Hardware Company:

James Stodders and Francis Shelton Reynolds appear to have been the owners of the company.

(Mr. Stodders and Mr. Reynolds are in the 1901 Canada census, although their individual names do not appear in the Vernon directory for 1900-1901.)

By 1903, Richard was in Vancouver, where he was a salesman for Wood, Vallance and Leggat; he was living at 1919 Beach Avenue.

Richard continued to work for the Wood, Vallance firm until about 1915. From 1904, he lived in a series of houses in the West End of Vancouver:

1904 to 1906 645 Burrard Street
1907 to 1908 1913 Beach Avenue
1909 2044 Comox Street
1910 to 1911 No listing for Richard Bull under Vancouver names
1912 to 1914 1677 Robson Street

On September 30, 1914, in Vancouver, Richard married Lily May St. Quinton. She was born on October 8, 1886, in Montreal, Quebec. Her father was Joseph Gisburn St. Quinton (1849-1935); her mother was Mary Spiers (1849-1924).

In 1915, Richard and Lily moved to 1501 River Avenue East, between Argyle Street and Victoria Drive. The same year, Richard began working as a manager for the R.L. Brown Hardware Company, which was at 550 Main Street.

Richard appears to have returned briefly to Wood, Vallance in 1919. From 1920 to 1922, however, he was with Share Brothers hardware on Cordova Street. By 1922, he was the manager of Kirk Hardware, which seems to have taken over both Share Brothers and R.L. Brown. (Also around 1922, the Marshall Wells Company acquired Wood, Vallance and Leggatt.)

By 1930, Richard was a clerk with Sterling Hardware, and he was living at 1332 East 59 Avenue.

By the 1940s, Richard’s sons and his son-in-law were all working for Marshall Wells.

By 1946, Richard was retired and had moved to 635 East 48 Avenue.

Richard died in Vancouver on March 1, 1948. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

In the early 1950s, Lily worked as an usher for the Olympia Theatre at 2381 East Hastings Street. Lily died in Surrey, British Columbia, on March 27, 1979. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Richard and Lily had the following children.
