Walter Stuart Moore was a dry goods merchant. He lived at 1096 Denman Street in 1914. His wife, Edith Alice Moore, had a dry goods store at 986 Denman Street in 1914.

 

Early Life in England

Walter Stuart Moore was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, on October 24, 1875. His parents were William and Sarah Moore. William Moore was a prison warden.

In 1891, Walter was living with his family in Horfield, Gloucestershire. Walter was a draper’s apprentice. In 1901, he was living in Islington, London. He was a draper’s assistant.

In 1905, in Bishopston, Gloucestershire, Walter married Edith Alice Haslam. She was born in Streatham, London, on November 13, 1878. Her parents were George (or James) and Katherine Charlotte Haslam.

 

To Canada

About 1910, Walter and Edith moved to Canada. In 1911, they were in the Richmond riding in the New Westminster district of British Columbia.

In 1913, Walter was living on 17th Avenue at the corner of John Street. He had a dry goods business in the Hannah (or Hanna) Block, at 169 East 12th Avenue.

In 1914, Walter had his dry goods business at 330 Main Street. He and Edith were living at 1096 Denman Street. Edith operated a dry goods store at 986 Denman Street, also in 1914.

In 1915, Walter and Edith moved to the Chilco district, northeast of Vanderhoof, British Columbia.

Walter and Edith became farmers in Chilco.

In 1918, the influenza epidemic struck the Vanderhoof area. In October, Walter became one of the victims of the disease.

Walter died on October 26, 1918. He was buried in Vanderhoof.

In December 1918, Edith began working at the Nechako Hotel in Vanderhoof.

On July 3, 1919, in Prince George, British Columbia, Edith married Robert Reid (often called “Bob Reid”), a farmer and blacksmith who was living in Vanderhoof. He was born on February 23, 1878, possibly in Mansfield, in the Muskoka area of Ontario. His parents were Robert Reid and Eliza Jane Woods.

Robert and Edith lived in Vanderhoof in the 1930s and 1940s.

For a time in the 1930s, Robert operated a meat, fish and poultry business.

About 1939, Robert and Edith became the proprietors of the Reid Hotel in Vanderhoof.

The hotel was still there in 2012.

In 1943, there was a fire at the back of the hotel, but the fire department prevented the fire from causing much damage to the hotel itself.

Soon afterward, Robert and Edith put a new fire-resistant roof on the hotel.

Edith died in Vanderhoof on September 26, 1946. She was buried in the Vanderhoof Cemetery.

Robert Reid continued to live in the Vanderhoof area until the 1960s. His brother, Archie, died in 1963.

Robert died in Terrace, British Columbia on March 30, 1967. He was buried in the Vanderhoof Cemetery.

Marion Moore

Marion Moore was born in England about 1906. (She was often called “Mollie.”)

In 1911 she was living with Walter and Edith Moore in the Richmond district of British Columbia.

In the 1921 Canada census, she was living in Vanderhoof with Edith and her second husband, Robert Reid. Her name in the census was “Marion Moore Reid.”

In 1940, she married James Craig.

In 1946 she was living in Vanderhoof.

 

Stuart Moore

Stuart Moore was born in Vancouver on March 10, 1913.

In the 1921 Canada census, he was living in Vanderhoof with Edith and her second husband, Robert Reid. His name in the census was “Stuart Moore Reid.”

On February 5, 1936, in Quesnel, British Columbia, he married Fredrica Muriel Pinchbeck, who worked as a clerk. She was born in Kamloops, British Columbia about 1911. Her parents were Frederick William Pinchbeck and Edith Muriel Hill. This marriage ended in divorce on May 25, 1948 in Prince George, British Columbia.

He married June Forfar, who was the daughter of Edward and Molly Forfar. In 1961, Stuart and June were living in West Summerland, British Columbia.

In 1972, June was married to Rae Loper; she was living in Kelowna, British Columbia.
