Ada Cao was the widow of Angelo Cao. She lived at 1900 Haro Street from 1904 to 1907 and at 1812 Nelson Street from 1908 to 1917. Her son, Rico Christie Cao, was at 1808 Nelson Street in 1908.

Ada was born on August 13, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was baptized on September 19, 1847, at St Jude the Apostle, West Derby, Lancashire.

Ada’s father was James Hind Christie, a master mariner who was born in Liverpool, England on April 17, 1810. Ada’s mother was Mary Ann Fraser, who was born in Scotland about 1822. James and Mary Ann were married in Dumfries, Scotland on January 12, 1841. About 1860, James was living at No. 3, Cressington Park, Aigburth, Liverpool. James died on December 2, 1861. Mary Ann died on April 14, 1885. James and Mary Ann were buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery in Liverpool.

On November 29, 1872, at Saint Mary Church, Edge Hill, Lancashire, Ada married Angelo Cao, who was an iron merchant and general merchant. He was born in Venice, Italy, on February 21, 1842. His father was Nicolo Cao.

In 1881, Angelo and Ada were living at 3 Sea Bank Avenue in Liscard, Cheshire, England.

In the mid-1880s, Angelo was in a partnership with Stefano Pagano, carrying on business as general merchants in Liverpool, using the name of Garston and Company.

Their business was in Bancroft’s Buildings, which was on Old Hall Street.

It appears that the business was not a success. Angelo and Stefano dissolved the partnership on July 31, 1888, and made a deed of arrangement with their creditors.

Angelo died in West Derby, Lancashire on November 18, 1888.

By 1890, Ada and her children were living in an unnumbered house on Heatley Street in Vancouver. [The street directory gave her surname as “Cad.” The address was probably 320 Heatley Street.]

In the 1890s, Ada ran a rooming and boarding house at 320 Heatley Avenue.

About 1901, the family moved to 1676 Haro Street. By 1904, they were at 1900 Haro Street.

From 1908 to 1917, Ada was at 1812 Nelson Street.

In 1921, Ada, along with two sons and two grandchildren, was in the Canadian census at 216 18th Street East in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Ada died in North Vancouver on September 8, 1924.

Angelo and Ada had the following children.

Italia Christie Cao

Italia Christie Cao was born in Formby, Ormskirk district, Lancashire. She was christened on September 6, 1874, in St. Peters Church, Formby, Lancashire.

On June 1, 1898, in Vancouver, she married John Herbert Jackson, who was an accountant. He was born on March 19, 1870, in Liverpool, England. His parents were John and Louise Jackson.

Italia died in Vancouver on December 15, 1935. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

John died in Vancouver on April 4, 1948.

Adriana Christie Cao

Adriana (“Nan”) Christie Cao was born in Formby, Ormskirk, Lancashire in early 1876.

On February 22, 1898, in Vancouver, she married Thompson Edgar Leon Taylor. He was born on October 6, 1875, in Harbertonford, near Totnes, Devonshire, England. His parents were John Taylor and Mary Flint.

Thompson became a co-director of shipping agents for C. Gardner-Johnson Ltd. Thompson died in Vancouver on June 28, 1952.

Adriana died in Vancouver on May 28, 1959.

Thomson and Adriana had at least two children.

Edward Bridgman Taylor was born on January 22, 1905, in Revelstoke, British Columbia. He became a shipping clerk; he was living in San Francisco, California in 1928. On September 22, 1928, in Caulfeild, British Columbia, he married Constance Elizabeth Matheson, who was a stenographer. She was born in 1908 in Arcola, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Alexander MacKenzie Matheson and Helen Cain. Edward died in Vancouver on August 29, 1933.

Thompson Levitt Flint Taylor was born in Vancouver on June 13, 1912. He never married. He worked as a shipper for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He died in Courtney, British Columbia, on August 19, 19152.

Ada Luigia Christie Cao

Ada Luigia Christie Cao (often called Luigia) was born on January 1, 1877 at Waterloo Land, West Derby, Lancashire.

On January 3, 1894, in Vancouver, she married Field Yolland, who was a clergyman. [His middle name may have been Battishill]. He was born on June 21, 1867, in Great Waltham, Essex. His parents were Bartholomew Stephen Yolland (1834-1891) and Ehretia Carwardine.

Field died at Essondale, British Columbia, on October 27, 1930.

Luigia died in Vancouver on March 16, 1966.

Field and Luigia had eight children.

Kate (“Kittie”) Christie CaoKate (“Kittie”) Christie Cao was born in Liverpool on January 18, 1878.

On August 1, 1908, she married Leopold Vivian. He was born on April 16, 1872, in Cornwall, England. His parents were Joseph Vivian and Elizabeth (“Bessie”) Burgess.

Kate died in Vancouver on June 28, 1959.

Leopold died in Victoria, British Columbia on December 24, 1966.

Angelo Christie Cao

Angelo Christie Cao was born in Birkinhead district, Lancashire, on February 24, 1879. He became a clerk for the B.C. Electric Company.

It appears that he is the person named “Christie Cao” who enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on August 23, 1915.

On February 24, 1920, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Leonora (“Nora”) Theresa Topp Turner. She was born on August 22, 1880, in Wales. Her parents were Frank Topp Turner and Mary Lavinia Ford.

Angelo died in Vancouver on October 25, 1949.

Nora died in Langford, British Columbia, on February 25, 1965.

Clifford Christie Cao

Clifford Christie Cao was born in or near Liverpool on March 31, 1880. He was christened at St. Peter’s Church in Liverpool on April 29, 1880.

From 1900 to 1907, Clifford was a well-known lacrosse star. He was also active in Vancouver yachting circles. He and his brother Rico designed and built a 32-foot yacht. It was originally called “Swipe,” because they allegedly stole the timber to build it. Later, it was called Iola; its owner was Dave Manley, who may have been Charles Sanford Douglas’s step-son. Clifford also had a boad called “Spirit I.”

Clifford never married. He worked as a tinsmith.

He died in Vancouver on May 21, 1941.

Rico Christie Cao [also known as Probo Wallace Federico Christie Cao]

Rico Christie Cao was born on July 14, 1884.

Along with his brother, Clifford, Rico designed and built a 32-foot yacht called Iola.

He became a bookkeeper and accountant in the lumber sales business.

On March 11, 1905, in Vancouver, he married Violet Ellen Christie. The marriage certificate said that she was born in Liverpool, England about 1885. [Other documents indicate that she was born in Washington State.] Her parents were Athelstan Christie and Annie Walker. This marriage seems to have ended, either by divorce or annulment, sometime after the 1911 Canada census. Rico and Violet had a son named Athelstan Rico Cao [he was later known as Athelstan Higman].

In January 1916, Rico enlisted and became a sergeant with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He returned to Canada in June 1919.

At some point, he married Lillian Hazel Buck. She was born in Nova Scotia on February 13, 1890. Her father was Lionel H. Buck, who was born in England about 1851. Her mother was Isabel, who was born in New Brunswick in 1862.

Rico died in North Vancouver on March 23, 1958.

Lillian died in Vancouver on September 12, 1981.

Violet’s second marriage

Violet’s marriage to Rico appears to have ended after 1911. On December 9, 1915, in New Westminster, British Columbia, Violet married Robert William Dunbar Higman, who was a salesman. He was born about on December 26, 1885, in Bothwell, near London, Ontario. His parents were Andrew Higman and Mary Mcintosh. The marriage certificate described Violet as a spinster (that is, she had not been married before).

In June 1924, Robert travelled to Seattle, Washington. He was an automobile salesman. His wife, Violet, was living in the Manhattan Apartments in Vancouver.

In June 1924, Violet also travelled to Seattle, on her way to Los Angeles, California. The immigration record said that her husband, “Robert S. Higman,” was living at 6037 Balsam Street in Vancouver.

Violet was travelling with Athlestan Higman (age 15), who was probably the son of Rico and Violet; also with Violet were Roberta C. Higman (age 4) and Patricia C. Higman (age 3).

By 1930, Robert and Violet were living in San Francisco, along with three children, who were all born in Canada: Stan (age 22) (probably Athlestan); Roberta (age 12); and Patrica (age 10).

Robert became a naturalized United States citizen in 1932; he was living in San Francisco, California, at the time.

In 1940, Robert and Violet were living in San Francisco. Robert was a salesman in the automobile retail business.

In 1942, Robert registered with the United States military. He was living in San Francisco, and was working for Bethlehem Steel.

It appears that Violet died in San Francisco on September 8, 1967.

Robert died in San Francisco on June 23, 1978.

Athlestan, the son of Rico and Violet, was living in Alameda County, California, when he died on March 4, 1999.

I had just arrived from Tacoma, Wash, had little money, wanted a place to stop, and took a room there, but whether I had meals there or not I cannot say; I think I must have, but I stayed a week or ten days only. I don’t know, exactly, how long I stayed there. Mrs. Cao had several children, and, apparently, she was having a struggle. My recollection is that she was a short lady; anyway not tall, and usually wore a bonet tied with a bow under the chin; quite old style and just a little bit out of fashion; bonnets had gone out some years earlier. One of the sons, afterwards, was quite a yachtsman, and it seems the “Cao brothers” owned a yacht; I forget. J.S.M. [James Skitt Matthews].”
