Lyon, Joseph James (1876-1935)

Joseph James Lyon was a checker with the Canadian Pacific Railway freight department. He lived at 1120 Denman Street from 1920 to 1922.

Joseph James Lyon was born on October 26, 1876, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan District, Lancashire, England. His father was Charles Lyon. His mother was Mary Sherry.

In 1898, Joseph married Catherine Deady. She was born in Wigan District, Lancashire, on January 11, 1873.

The family moved to Canada about 1905. They lived in Fernie, British Columbia, where Joseph worked as a coal miner and policeman.

In August 1915, Joseph enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

After the war, the family lived in Vancouver. Joseph worked as a checker for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The family was at the following addresses:

1920 to 1922 1120 Denman Street
1923 to 1929 1822 Pendrell Street
1930 to 1935 1017 Cardero Street

Joseph was a well-known member of the lawn bowling community in Vancouver.

Joseph died in Vancouver on April 18, 1935. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Catherine died in Essondale, British Columbia, on April 10, 1959. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Joseph and Catherine had the following children.

 

Mary Kathleen Lyon

Mary Kathleen Lyon (sometimes called “Kay”) was born in Lancashire, England, on January 25, 1899. She worked as a hairdresser.

On August 6, 1928, in Vancouver, she married Harold Pendreigh, who was a salesman for United Cigar Stores. He was born on February 26, 1894, in Leyland, Chorley District, Lancashire. His father was James Wiliam Pendreigh. His mother was Eliza-Anne Smith-Parker.

Harold died in Vancouver on September 12, 1961. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Kay died in Vancouver on March 25, 1969. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Joseph Terrence Lyon

Joseph Terrence Lyon (often called “Terry”) was born on June 30, 1901, in Wigan District, Lancashire.

He did not marry.

For much of his career, he worked as an elevator operator.

He died in Vancouver on September 27, 1971. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Charles Edward Lyon

Charles Edward Lyon was born on December 20, 1902, in Wigan District, Lancashire.

He worked as a woodworker.

He married Mary Elma Bolan (often called “Elma”).

Charles died in Vancouver on September 13, 1985. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Elma died on August 19, 2006. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Ann (“Annie”) Lyon

Ann Lyon was born in Fernie, British Columbia, on October 21, 1906.

She did not marry.

She worked as a service adviser for the British Columbia Telephone Company.

She died in Vancouver on March 24, 1965. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

“Joseph J. Lyon, of 1017 Carder street, old time resident and well-known sportsman, died Thursday in Shaughnessy Military Hospital. He was aged 58.

Born in England, M. Lyon came to Vancouver thirty years ago. He was prominent in lawn bowling circles, being a member of the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club and taking an active part in all city competitions. During the war he served overseas with the 54th Battalion. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Charles and Perry [sic:Terry]; and two daughters, Mrs. H. Pendreigh and Ann, all of Vancouver.

Requiem mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday in the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, thirty-eighth and Granville, by Father M. Collins. Interment will take place in the returned soldiers’ plot, Mountain View Cemetery. T.J Kearney Undertaking Co. is in charge of the arrangements.”
