Early Life

Charles Cook was born in Porlock, Somerset, England on April 16, 1864. (Some sources say that his birthplace was Yarner, which is just west of Porlock). His parents were Thomas Cook (1833-1900) and Ann Rattenbury (1833-1919).

In 1871 and 1881, Charles was living in Porlock. He worked as a farm laborer.

 

Marriage to Mary Down

On June 29, 1889 in Luccombe (or Luckham), Somerset, Charles married Mary Down.

In 1891, Charles and Mary were living in Porlock, Somerset. Charles was working as a gardener and a groom.

In 1901, they were in Westmeston, Sussex. Charles was a domestic groom.

 

To Canada

In March 1911, Charles and his son, Charles William John Cook, sailed from England to St. John, New Brunswick, on their way to Vancouver.

In September 1911, Mary sailed from Liverpool to Quebec City, on her way to Vancouver to join her husband, who was a “coachman.” Mary’s daughters, Ethel and Beatrice, travelled with her.

Charles Cook appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. (It appears that this is the same person, although the directory gave him a middle initial “E.” He was living at the rear of 1740 Alberni Street, and he was working as a teamster.)

Charles worked as a labourer and watchman for Vancouver Ship Yards during the 1920s and 1930s.

He died in Vancouver on August 20, 1940. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Mary died in Vancouver on February 3, 1941. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Elizabeth Ann Cook

Elizabeth Ann Cook was born in Porlock, Somerset, England on December 7, 1889.

In 1891, she was living with her parents in Porlock.

In 1901, she was with her parents in Westmeston, Sussex.

In 1911, she was a domestic general servant with the family of George Richard Grier in Eastbourne, Sussex.

In April 1914, she sailed from Liverpool, England to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on her way to Vancouver. She described herself as a domestic servant, and she planned to carry on that occupation in Vancouver.

On April 12, 1916, in Vancouver, Elizabeth married Fredrick Herbert Stonnell, who was a soldier, although he had earlier worked as a grocery clerk. (He sometimes used the name “Herbert” or “Herb.”) He was born on February 24, 1898 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. His parents were Thomas William Stonnell (1875-1949) and Mary Ann Cox (1877-1923).

Frederick served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was discharged during the general demobilization at the end of the war. (By that time, he was also medically unfit.)

Frederick later worked as a baker. He died in Vancouver on December 29, 1969. He was buried in Queens Park Cemetery and Mausoleum in Calgary, Alberta.

Dorothy Mary Cook

Dorothy Mary Cook was born in Cardiff, Wales on December 3, 1892.

In 1901, she was living with her parents in Westmeston, Sussex.

In 1911, she was a domestic servant in the household of John Harley in Pulborough, Sussex.

In 1914, in Hailsham, Sussex, Dorothy married Harold Davey, who was a grocer’s assistant. He was born in Polegate, Sussex, on January 4, 1890. His parents were Dorsey Davey (1858–1937) and Eliza Hawkins (1855-1928).

In 1920, Harold and Dorothy sailed from Liverpool, England to Quebec City, Quebec, on their way to Vancouver.

For a time, Harold was a clerk with Woodward’s department stores in Vancouver. In the late 1920s, he and Dorothy moved to Chilliwack, British Columbia, where Harold worked at Spencer’s department store.

Harold died in Chilliwack on January 2, 1939.

Charles William John Cook

Charles William John Cook was born in Cardiff, Wales on October 8, 1895.

He worked as a marine engineer.

On March 12, 1927, in Vancouver, he married Winnifred Kate Jorgensen. She was born in Wales on January 27, 1906. Her parents were Arthur Jorgensen (1876-1916) and Kate Fitch (1876-1955).

Charles’s and Winnifred’s marriage ended in divorce. Charles died in Vancouver on January 6, 1979.

Winnifred married Anton Fichter, who was a farm labourer. He was born in Russia on January 27, 1901. His father was Kasper Fichter. (When Winnifred’s sister, May, died on December 13, 1984, her death notice referred to her sister, “Winnie Fichter.”)

Winnifred died in Merritt, British Columbia on January 31, 1987. She was buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Merritt.

Anton Fichter died in Kamloops, British Columbia on May 19, 1987. He was buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Merritt.

 

Ethel Mary Cook

Ethel May Cook was born in Novington, Sussex, England on May 16, 1900.

She travelled to Canada with her mother in 1911.

On December 18, 1920, in Vancouver, she married William Alexander McFarlane, who was a mechanic. He was born in Cuyuga, Ontario on March 7, 1892. His parents were Peter McFarlane and Minerva Jane Heaton.

William worked as a steam engineer in an oil refinery. He died in Dewdney, British Columbia on March 17, 1964.

Ethel died in Vancouver on April 11, 1971.

Beatrice Ruby Cook

Beatrice Ruby Cook was born in Jevington, near Polegate, Sussex, England in 1907. (She was often called “Ruby.”)

She travelled to Canada with her mother in 1911.

In January 1927, she became engaged to Robert Leonard Fletcher, who worked as a shipper. He was born in Calgary, Alberta on September 7, 1907. His parents were Matthew Clarke Fletcher and Ada Ellen Cook.

This marriage ended in divorce in New Westminster, British Columbia on June 12, 1936.

Ruby later married Olaf Nikolai Fylling, who was a fisherman. He was born in Langevag (near Alesund), Norway on July 4, 1902. His parents were Ole Fylling and Nicholina Nymark.

Olaf had been married before, to Elisabeth Merila. This marriage occurred in Vancouver on December 3, 1928. It ended in divorce on February 3, 1956.

On December 31, 1937, in Vancouver, Robert Fletcher married Florence Ellen Salonen. She was born in Sylvan Lake, Alberta about 1906. Her parents were Oscar Edward Salonen and Ida Maria Wirtanin.

Robert and Florence were divorced in 1953.

On December 11, 1953, in Whatcom County, Washington, Robert married Jessie Agnes Mitchell. She was born in Carmangay, Alberta on December 27, 1917. Her parents were Wilbert Henry and Hanna Laura Miller.

Jessie died in Penticton, British Columbia on November 1, 1980.

Robert died in Penticton on February 15, 1983.
