de Lautour, Percival John Deck (1881-1967)

Percival John Deck de Lautour was a civil engineer who lived at 1224 Denman Street in 1910.

Percival, who was born on January 30, 1881, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, normally went by the name “Peter.” His father was Edward Frederick de Lautour (1854-1928). Peter’s mother was Edith Jadis (1847-1916), who was the daughter of Reverend John Jadis (1811-1863), the Vicar of Humbleton in Yorkshire, and Jane Anne Hopkins.

In 1903, in Greenwich district, England, Peter married Mable (or Mabel) Knight Gostling. She was born in 1881 in North Aylesford district in Kent.

According to the 1911 Canada census, Mabel arrived in Canada in 1906, and Peter arrived in 1908.

They appear to have lived in Vancouver only in 1910.

In May 1910, Peter went to the Okanagan area of British Columbia to prepare for the provincial government’s hydrographic survey of the Railway Belt area.

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Peter and Mabel were living in Nicola, British Columbia.

In 1912, as part of Peter’s research into water records in the Railway Belt, he discovered a series of old records that had been undisturbed for years.

In December 1912, Peter submitted his report on parts of the watershed of the Fraser River and the Thompson River.

By 1916, Peter had become active in the Canadian military forces.

On October 10, 1916, Peter signed his officer’s declaration as a captain in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He stated that he and Mabel were living in Vernon, British Columbia. It appears that he did serve with the military forces.

It appears that Peter and Mabel and their family went to England for much of the time after the war.

The 1922 Nigerian Handbook shows “P.J.D. de Lautour” as an engineer with the Capital Works group:

In the mid-1920s, Peter was an executive engineer of the East Indian Railway.

Peter’s and Mabel’s relationship was somewhat strained and, for the latter part of his life they lived separate, though amicable, existences.

Much of the time in the early 1960s, Peter lived in Birmingham, England.

Peter died in Sutton, Surrey, England in 1967.

Mabel died in Ealing, London, in 1969.

Peter and Mabel had the following children.

Percival Charles de Lautour

Percival Charles de Lautour was born in Vancouver on September 27, 1909.

He seems to have used Charles as his normal given name.

In 1944, he married Moyra Fessas (Bishop) in Marylebone, London, England. She was born in 1919 in London, England. Her father was Constatine Fessas; her mother was Agnes Sarah O’Neill.

Moyra had been married in late 1936, to Harry M. Bishop.

Charles was a film producer in Britain, who also lent his name as producer for films by Cy Endfield (1914-1995), an American who had been blacklisted during the anti-communist period in the United States.

Charles and Moyra were later divorced.

In 1958, Charles married Sirkka L Kemppainen in Marylebone, London, England.

Charles died in July 1982 in Lewes, East Sussex, England.

Moyra married Freddy Silberman. Moyra died on October 10, 2008, in London, England.

Charles and Moyra had two children who became actors.

Frances (Frankie) de la Tour was born on July 30, 1944, in Bovingdon, England. She became a stage, television and film actor.

Andrew (Andy) de Lautour was born in 1948 in Colchester, England. He became an actor and screenwriter.

Grace E. [Emma] de Lautour

Grace E. de Lautour was born in British Columbia in March 1911.

In 1941, in England, she married John S. Eldridge.

Robert Edward Vane de Lautour

Robert Edward Vane de Lautour was born about 1917. He died during the Second World War, on June 20, 1944.

  2. As he was my Godfather, I can say with confidence that he never used the name ‘Percival’ he was always ‘Peter’. His relationship with Mabel was somewhat strained and, for the latter part of his life they lived separate, though amicable, existences. Much of the time, in the early sixties, he spent living with us in Birmingham.
