George Herbert Head was a lawyer. He lived at 1999 Beach Avenue in 1915.

George Herbert Head was born on April 13, 1869, in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. His father was George Frederick Head (1836-1912), a clergyman who was the vicar of Clifton and the honorary canon of Bristol Cathedral. George’s mother was Mary Henrietta Bolton (1837-1912). (George had a younger brother, Frederick Waldegrave Head (1874-1941), who was the Archbishop of Melbourne, Australia, from 1929 to 1941.)

George went to Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge. He received a B.A. in 1891 and an M.A. in 1905. (The announcement of his Master of Arts degree appeared in December 1904.)

He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple on July 5, 1905. He was later associated with Fountain Court in the Middle Temple.

In 1911 he was living in number 5h, Portman Mansions, in St. Marylebone, London, England.

George travelled to Vancouver in 1912. He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver:

1913 951 Dunsmuir Street (Western Club)
1914 1154 Gilford Street (Sylvia Court)
1915 1999 Beach Avenue

In 1912, George became engaged to Geraldine Maria Pipon. She was born in London, England, in 1887. Her father was Henry Pipon (1843-1924), who was the resident governor of the Tower of London. Geraldine’s mother was Louisa Ann Edmonstone (1844-1921).

In 1913, George was a law student with the firm of Tupper, Kitto and Wightman.

Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1915, page 1016.

The partners in the firm were:

  • Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper (1855-1927), who lived at 2050 Barclay Street from 1899 to about 1924.
  • Alexander John Kitto (1876-1916), who was killed in action during the First World War.
  • Henry W. Wightman, who was on active service in the First World War in 1916. (This appears to be Henry Worthington Wightman (1875-1975).)

On June 2, 1913, George and Geraldine were married in Vancouver. They moved into Sylvia Court, at 1154 Gilford Street.

Vancouver Social Register and Club Directory, 1914, page 30.

In 1914 and 1915, he had finished his period of being a law student, and he was a lawyer with the firm of Tupper, Kitto and Wightman.

He was not in the Vancouver directories after 1915, and it appears that he went back to England around that time.

In 1922 he became a judge of the Western Circuit of the County Court in England.

In the fall of 1926 he had three attacks of influenza. He did not seem to be getting well, and he suffered from insomnia. He died on February 11, 1927, after he fell under a train at Victoria underground station in London. An inquest concluded that he had thrown himself in front of the train while he was “not of sane mind.”

It appears that Geraldine died in Norwich, Norfolk, England, in 1959.

George and Geraldine had the following children.

Henry Nigel Head

Henry Nigel Head was born in Vancouver on December 16, 1914. He lived only a few hours.

He obtained an honours Bachelor of Arts degree from Balliol College at the University of Oxford.

He died on February 12, 1944, while serving during the Second World War. He was a passenger on the S.S. Khedive Ismail, which was a troop ship. A Japanese submarine sank the Khedive Ismail south of the Maldive Islands.

Adrian Herbert Head,

Adrian Herbert Head was born in Yorkshire, England, on December 4, 1923.

From 1937 to 1937, he was a naval cadet at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

He studied French and German at Magdalen College at the University of Oxford.

In 1947, he was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, London.

He was a judge from 1972 to 1996.

He died in February 2012.
