Creer, Alfred Douglas (1878-1954)

Alfred Douglas Creer was a civil engineer. He lived at 1901 Haro Street in 1914 and 1915.

He was born on May 24, 1878, in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. His father was Alfred Creer. His mother was Jane Elizabeth Farrar.

Alfred Douglas Creer went to school at St. Peter’s in York, and at Yorkshire College in Leeds.

When he was 16, he went to work at Henry Leetham and Sons flour milling company in York. He also became an articled pupil with the York city engineer.

By 1898 he was an engineering assistant with James Mansergh and Sons. In 1901, he was the chief assistant resident engineer at the Exmouth main drainage works. He was later a resident engineer on the Rochdale waterworks pipe line and on the Plymouth main drainage works.

In 1904, he married Mary Kathleen Glaisby. She was born on March 17, 1879, in York, Yorkshire. Her father was William Punderson Glaisby (1847-1919), who was a photographer and bookseller. Her mother was Mary Jane Anderson (1848-1948).

In 1909, Alfred started his own business as a consulting engineer in York.

He came to Canada in 1911, and spent a year as an assistant engineer in City of Toronto’s department of works.

He and his family arrived in Vancouver about 1912. He appeared at the following addresses in the Vancouver area.

From 1913 to 1917, he was the chief engineer with the Vancouver and District Joint Sewerage Board. (He later sued the board for breach of contract.)

In 1918 he began his own business in Vancouver as a consulting engineer.

He was an original member of the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia, and he was registrar of the association from 1941 to 1949. He became a life member of the association in 1948. He also belonged to the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Mary died in Vancouver on August 20, 1941. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

By 1946, Alfred had married Annabelle I. Fisher.

Alfred died in West Vancouver on September 8, 1954. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Kathleen Joan Creer

Kathleen Joan Creer was born on November 28, 1905, in Plymouth, England.

On September 9, 1931, in Vancouver, Kathleen married Robert Hamilton Wright, who was a medical researcher. He was born in Vancouver on December 26, 1906. His father was Leslie Havelock Wright, an insurance agent who lived at 1865 Barclay Street from 1902 to 1910. Robert’s mother was Clare (or “Clara”) Dupuy Rogers.

Robert died in Vancouver on August 10, 1985.

Kathleen died in Vancouver on May 9, 1993.

 

Kenneth Douglas Creer

Kenneth Douglas Creer was born on January 3, 1908, in Plymouth, England.

He worked as a chartered accountant.

On March 18, 1931, in Vancouver, he married Helen Aileen White. She was born in London, Ontario, about 1908. Her father was George Edward White. Her mother was Bessie May Grant.

Kenneth died in Vancouver on February 18, 1988.

 

Alan Glaisby Creer

Alan Glaisby Creer went to St. George’s School in Vancouver.

He later became the secretary of the Vancouver Real Estate Board. He was married to Marian.

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver created an annual scholarship at the University of British Columbia in memory of Alan G. Creer.

“Alfred Douglas Creer, M.E.I.C, former registrar of the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia, passed away in Vancouver on September 8, 1954.

Mr. Creer was born in Halifax, England, on May 24, 1878. He received his education at St. Peter’s in York and at Yorkshire College in Leeds, and began his engineering career at the age of 16 in the H. Leethams Mills in York and as an articled pupil to the York city engineer. During the next eight years he served as company resident engineer on the Rochdale waterworks pipe line and on the Plymouth main drainage works. He opened his offices as consulting engineer in York in 1909.

He came to Canada in 1911 and that same year was appointed assistant engineer in the department of works of the City of Toronto. A year later he went to Vancouver where he joined the staff of Vancouver and District Joint Sewerage and Drainage Scheme with which he held the post of chief engineer from 1913 until 1917. In 1918 he began his long career as a consulting engineer in Vancouver.

Mr. Creer, one of the original members of the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia, was appointed registrar of the Association in 1941 and served as such for eight consecutive years. He was instrumental in starting The Blue Print, the original journal of the British Columbia Engineering Society. He was appointed to life membership in the Association in 1948. He was also a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

He joined the Engineering Institute of Canada in 1911 as an Associate Member, transferring to Member in 1914. He served as chairman of the Vancouver Branch in 1928-29, and in 1942 was granted Life Membership in the Institute.”
