Buck, George Harold (1881-1927)

George Harold Buck operated a refreshment parlour and confectionery, and he ran a photographic gallery at the entrance to Stanley Park.

He lived at 1997 Georgia Street in 1917 and 1918.

 

Family Background and Early Life

George Harold Buck was born on May 4, 1881, in Brantford, Ontario. (Some sources say that his full name was “Peter George Harold Buck.”) His parents were Judson Wilfred Buck (1835-1906) and Sarah Dimmock (1847-1932). Judson Buck was a manufacturer with the William Buck Stove Company.

George was living with his parents in Brantford in 1891 and 1901.

In 1901 he was a clerk in a music store.

There is little information available for his time between 1901 and 1917.

 

To Oregon

According to a 1920 immigration document, George was in Oregon from 1904 to 1906.

 

To Vancouver

George first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1917. He was a confectioner at 1997 Georgia Street.

In September 1918, he had to appear in Police Court. The military police had arrested him and charged him with not having proper proof of being over age for “Class One.” (Class One included men between the ages of 20 and 34 who were bachelors or widowers without children.) Magistrate Shaw fined him $10, and the military took George into custody.

Marriage to Eunice Fleury

On December 22, 1919, in Vancouver, George married Eunice Marie Fleury. She was born in Ludington, Mason, Michigan, on July 17, 1897. Her parents were Ovila Louis Fleury (1869-1928) and Catherine Marie Ames (1869-1938). Ovila Fleury was a miller.

 

 

Travel to United States

In November 1920, George travelled to visit a friend in Camp Lewis, Washington. He said that he was employed as a photographer in Camp Lewis.

In the 1921 Canada census, George and Eunice were living in Toronto, Ontario, along with their daughter, Marguerite.

 

To California

In 1923, George and Eunice were living at 1989 Eagle Street (or Avenue) in Los Angeles, California when their son, Peter Wilfred Lewis Buck, was born on December 5.

George was a salesman with the National Land Value Guaranty Company.

In 1927, George was a salesman for the Park Development Company in Toronto. George’s brother, Stanley Ernest Buck, was the secretary-treasurer of the company.

George died in Toronto on October 16, 1927. He was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Toronto.

Eunice’s Marriage to Stephen Picelich

On February 18, 1929, in Los Angeles, Eunice married Stephen Blas Picelich, who was a butcher.

Stephen was born on June 17, 1886 in Orašac, Dubrovnik, Dubrovačko-Neretvanska, Croatia (Dalmatia).

He arrived in the United States in 1898.

In 1910 he declared his intention to become a naturalized United States citizen. He was working as a sausage maker in Bisbee, Arizona.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, Eunice and Stephen were living in Los Angeles. Stephen worked as a meat cutter.

Eunice had a brother, Oliva W. Fleury, who died on 1958.

Marguerite Catherine Buck

Marguerite Catherine Buck was born in Bellingham, Washington on November 12, 1920.

On January 14, 1940, in Las Vegas, Nevada, she married Alexander Goodman. He was born on September 17, 1919 in Belfast, Ireland. His parents were James Gordon Goodman and Mary Catherine Irwin.

Alexander’s and Marguerite’s marriage ended in divorce. (Alexander died on February 23, 2001, in Camp Verde, Arizona.)

On March 19, 1947, in Los Angeles, Marguerite married Dias Arzel De Vore.
