Norman V. Harris was an employee of the Vancouver Sun’s circulation department. He lived at 1818 Comox Street in 1920.

His name was actually Vivian Norman Harris, although he was sometimes called “V. Norman Harris” or “Norman Harris.” (In this biography, he is generally called “Norman.”)

 

Family Background

Vivian Norman Harris was born on September 26, 1888, in Amington, near Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. His parents were Henry (“Harry”) Harris (1857-1895) and Hannah Baker Stacey (1857-1941).

Harry Harris was a schoolmaster who was born in Stoke Prior, Worcestershire, on October 25, 1858.

In 1878, Harry became the assistant master at the Tamworth boys school.

On July 26, 1883, in Bromyard, Hereford, England, Harry married Hannah Baker Stacey. She was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on November 26, 1857. Her parents were John Stacey (born about 1822) and Caroline Cowdry (born about 1823).

In 1891, the Harrises were living in Amington. Harry Harris was the local schoolmaster and Hannah was the schoolmistress.

Harry died in Amington on June 22, 1895.

In 1901, Hannah and her children were living at 54 Albert Road in Tamworth. Hannah was the proprietor of a grocery shop.

According to the 1921 Canada census, Hannah immigrated to Canada about 1909.

It appears that she was living in Atlin, British Columbia in 1911, along with her son, Reginald.

She later went back to England for a time. In 1913, she sailed from Liverpool to Quebec City, on her way to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

On August 4, 1917, in Neepawa, Manitoba, Hannah married John Kitson. He was born in England on November 17, 1853.

By 1921, John and Hannah were living in South Vancouver

John died in Vancouver on February 19, 1933.

Norman’s Early Life

In 1891, Norman was living in Amington with his parents.

In 1901, he was with his mother in Tamworth.

In August 1908, he boarded the Empress of Britain in Liverpool. He landed in Quebec City, on his way to Winnipeg.

On December 11, 1910, in Winnipeg, he married Eleanor Elizabeth Foxe. She was born in Tobernaveen, Shilvoden, Grange, Ireland on January 29, 1888. Her parents were Robert Foxe and Christina Hall.

In 1916, he was in Calgary.

To Vancouver

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1920. He was living at 1818 Comox Street, and he worked in the circulation department of the Vancouver Sun newspaper. (The directory listed him as “Norman V. Harris.”)

From 1920 to 1930 he lived at the following addresses.

In 1926 and 1927, he was an insurance broker.

In 1930, he was with the Regal Lamp Company, whose business was at 2566 Granville Street.

He later worked as a salesman.

He died in Vancouver on August 14, 1967.

Norman George Harris

Norman George Harris was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 27, 1911. (He was sometimes called Norman George Vivian Harris.)

In February 1944, he became engaged to Alice Doreen Schofield. She was born in Vancouver on August 28, 1916. Her parents were Henry Wilson Schofield (1887–1936) and Hilda Claire Peters (1888–1979). (Hilda was later married to Albert Henry Middleton (1882-1947) and Gordon Stewart Raphael (1885-1970)).
