Henry McDowell was a pharmacist and proprietor of a coal company. He lived at 1900 Barclay Street from 1903 to 1917. His wife, Elizabeth Adelia (“Dell”) McDowell, was at 1900 Barclay Street in 1917 and 1918.

Henry McDowell (sometimes called “Harry”) was born on March 3, 1862, in Milton, Halton County, Ontario. His parents were Robert McDowell (1830-1864) and Mary Ann Doherty (1830-1891).

Harry went to school in Ontario, and then taught school for two years.

He later entered the pharmacy business, first with Henry Watson in Milton, and then with O’Connor and Company in Port Arthur, Ontario.

He arrived in Vancouver in June 1886 and opened a drug store. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1888.

On September 3, 1890, in Pembroke, Ontario, Harry married Elizabeth Adelia (“Dell”) Clarke. She was born in Pembroke on April 1, 1861. Her parents were Edward Clarke (1834-1923) and Emily Alice Warren (1839-1899).

In 1891, Harry became partners with Harry Holgate Watson, who was the son of Henry Watson, the pharmacist from Milton. Like many other druggists of the time, Harry made his own patent medicines.

In 1895, Harry joined his business with Atkins and Atkins to form the McDowell-Atkins-Watson Company. In 1902, Harry’s wholesale drug business merged with Henderson Brothers of Victoria. The wholesale company later became known as the National Drug Company. In 1903, Harry and Dell moved from their house at 1058 Pender Street to 1900 Barclay Street. The Pender Street house became the Children’s Aid Society home.

Harry continued to operate a retail drug business in Vancouver until he retired about 1907.

Harry had other interests besides the drug business. He was associated with the Vancouver Street Railway and Electric Light Company, the Union Steamship Company, and the Vancouver City Foundry company. He was a member of the Vancouver Board of Trade, and served as the board’s president in 1910.

He was also the president of the McDowell-Mouat Coal Company.

Harry died in Vancouver on February 7, 1917. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

The gross value of his estate was $20,275. However, he had significant debts and liabilities, most of which were mortgages on his real property. Dell received the whole of the net estate, which was about $2000.

Dell continued to live in Vancouver through the 1920s and early 1930s. She died in Vancouver on May 18, 1936. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary Emily McDowell

Mary Emily McDowell was born in Vancouver on August 21, 1891.

She went to school at Havergal College in Toronto.

On June 24, 1914, in Vancouver, she married Arthur Cecil Speirs, who was a railroad contractor. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 16, 1885. His parents were James Scott Speirs and Sarah Frances Roadhouse. After a honeymoon trip to Portland, Oregon, Arthur and Mary went to live in McBride, British Columbia.

Later they went to Alice Arm, British Columbia, where Arthur was the purchasing agent for the Dolly Varden Mines.

Mary became ill and travelled to Vancouver for medical treatment. She died in Vancouver on June 9, 1917. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On February 4, 1920, in Victoria, British Columbia, Arthur married Sarah Elizabeth McLeod. She was born on December 30, 1892, in Port Arthur, Ontario. Her parents were Thomas Ronald Mcleod and Annie Macdonald.

Sarah died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on August 18, 1969.

Arthur died in Vancouver on February 4, 1976.

 

Robert (“Archie”) Clarke McDowell.

Robert Clarke McDowell was born in Vancouver on October 3, 1894.

He may have attended Queen’s School in Vancouver.

He worked as a clerk with the Bank of Montreal.

In 1917, he was drafted to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He served from April 29, 1918, until he was discharged on July 14, 1919.

On June 23, 1924, in Vancouver, he married Constance Miriam Harpur, who was a bookkeeper. She was born on March 15, 1899, in Vancouver. Her parents were Horace William Harpur and Annie Barker.

In 1936, Robert and Constance were living in Vernon, British Columbia. By 1945, they were in Vancouver.

In 1957, Robert became a member of the Board of Debt Retirement Trustees.

Robert was the manager of the New Westminster branch of the Bank of Montreal until he retired.

In 1970, he applied to receive a Pioneer Medallion. During 1971, the provincial government awarded these medallions to people who were born or resident in Canada before January 1, 1897.

Robert died in Vancouver on April 9, 1990. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Constance died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 10, 1990. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Robert Harpur McDowell

Robert Harpur McDowell was born on February 3, 1925.

He obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1957.

He lived in Chula Vista, California, and worked as an optometrist.

He died in San Diego County, California, on February 24, 1984.

 

Elizabeth Ann McDowell

In 1956, Elizabeth McDowell married Bruce Edward McTaggart

Bruce was apparently Elizabeth’s cousin. (Bruce’s parents were Mayne Donald McTaggart and Norah Christine Harpur, who were married in Vancouver on June 12, 1922. Norah was the sister of Constance Miriam Harpur, who was Elizabeth’s mother.)

Dell McLaren McDowell

Dell McLaren McDowell was born in Vancouver on October 29, 1902.

On April 12, 1927, in Vancouver, she married Ernest James Colton, who worked as a builder. He was born on January 27, 1902, in Leytonstone, England. His parents were James Robert Colton and Margaret Lamb.

Ernest died in Vancouver on February 19, 1972.

Dell died in Vancouver on November 24, 1986.

Dell and Ernest had the following children.

 

Ernest James Henry Colton

Ernest James Henry Colton was born in Vancouver on May 31, 1933.

He attended General Gordon Elementary School and Kitsilano Secondary School.

On October 9, 1956, he married Marion Winnifred Blackley. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 7, 1935 Her parents were James William Blackley (1910-1965) and Evelyn Charlotte Carver (1912-1993).

Ernest belonged to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.

Ernest died on February 9, 2012.

Marion died on March 2, 2012.

 

Margaret Elizabeth Colton

Margaret Elizabeth (“Liz”) Colton was born in Vancouver on October 18, 1936.

On May 24, 1957, in Vancouver, she married Noel Edward (“Ted”) Cowan. His parents were Frederic David Cowan (1903-1989) and Margaret Clark Dunlop (1905-1989).

Ted was a member of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.

Ted died in Comox, British Columbia on May 29, 2010.

Liz died in Comox, British Columbia, on April 12, 2013.

Besides Mrs. McDowell, three children are left to mourn the loss of the death of Mr. McDowell. They are: Mrs. A.C. Spears [sic] of Alice arm, Miss McDowell at home and Mr. Archie C. McDowell, the the Bank of Montreal. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence, 1900 Barclay street.”

The deceased was a native daughter of Vancouver, being born Aug. 21, 1891, at the first home of the family then on Pender street west. She was married June, 1914, to Mr. Arthur C. Speirs, of Montreal, purchasing agent of the Dolly Varden Mines Company, Alice Arm. Of pleasing and energetic personality, she had a wide circle of friends throughout the province, all of whom will hear with regret of her early death. Her father’s death occurred about four months ago, after a long and painful illness.

Mrs. Speirs leaves a husband, mother, brother and sister to mourn her loss. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Harold King at the family residence, 1900 Barclay street, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock afterwards at Mountain View Cemetery, where interment will take place.”

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Elizabeth (Liz) Cowan, who died peacefully at St. Joseph’s General Hospital, Comox, B.C., on April 12, 2013, after a very brief illness.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Liz will always be remembered as the rock of her family by her children, Douglas (Joie), Catherine Ainsley, and Bruce (Mel), her grandchildren, Dennis (Stephanie), Nicole, Cory, Paul, and Leith, and her greatgrandson, Tristan, as well as by her many friends. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-three years, Ted, her daughter, Beverley, her brother, Jimmy, and her son-in-law, Jim Ainsley.

Liz was well known in the Comox Valley, active for many years in Co-Val Choristers, the Comox Valley Kennel Club, and the Comox Valley Needlearts Guild, she will also be remembered for her beautiful soprano voice and her dedication to St. George’s United Church.
