Gertrude Ethel Corbett was the widow of Dr. Samuel Charles Corbett. For a time in the 1920s she was a music teacher. She lived at 1877 Comox Street in 1919 and 1920 and at 1821 Barclay Street in 1929 and 1930.

Gertrude Ethel Corbett was born Gertrude Ethel Sangster on February 27, 1877, in Port Perry, Ontario. Her father was John Herbert Sangster (1829-1904), who was a physician and surgeon. Gertrude’s mother was Caroline Elizabeth McCausland (1849-1916).

On January 7, 1904, in Port Perry, Gertrude married Dr. Samuel Charles Corbett. He was born in Port Hope (or Perrytown) Ontario, on April 5, 1846. His father was Samuel Corbett (about 1790-1880). His mother was Margaret Ferguson (about 1812-1887). He obtained his medical degree from Victoria University in Toronto, and began his medical practice in Perrytown in 1867.

In 1882, Samuel moved to Winnipeg, where he carried on his medical practice.

He was a member of the St. Charles Country Club, the Manitoba Medical Society, and several lodges, including the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Independent Order of Foresters and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

He also owned and developed real property in Winnipeg.

The Corbetts lived in a house in Armstrong’s Point in Winnipeg.

In 1914, Samuel took his family to Long Beach, California, hoping to improve his health.

In 1915, the family travelled to Vancouver. They leased Norman Victor Gilling’s house at 1213 Beach Avenue. (In 1920, Norman Victor Gilling lived at 1934 Haro Street.)

Unfortunately, Samuel’s health did not improve, and he died in Vancouver on September 9, 1915.

Gertrude continued to live in Vancouver through the 1930s, including the following addresses.

By the 1950s, Gertrude had moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia. She died in Nanaimo on March 14, 1961. She was buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Garden in Cedar, British Columbia.

Samuel and Gertrude had the following children.

 

Kathleen Marie Corbett

Kathleen Marie Corbett was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 31, 1904.

On October 8, 1927, in Vancouver, she married Nathaniel Ede Martin. He was born in Vancouver on July 12, 1902. His father was Robert Martin. His mother was Lydia Anne Ede.

Nathaniel worked as a retail grocer. He died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on July 30, 1988.

Kathleen died on October 5, 1997.

 

Dorothy Gertrude Corbett

Dorothy Gertrude Corbett was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Mary 26, 1906. She died on June 7, 1907.

 

Beverly Wilfrid Corbett

Beverly Wilfrid Corbett was born on April 5, 1908, in Winnipeg. He worked as a shipping clerk.

On July 22, 1931, in Vancouver, he married Helen Davidson Bell. She was born in 1910, in Govan, Saskatchewan. Her father was George Robert Bell. Her mother was Helen Eckron (Ecron) Davidson. (Helen lived at 2056 Beach Avenue in 1919. Further information on this family appears on the page for Mrs. George Bell.)

Beverly’s and Helen’s marriage was dissolved in Vancouver on November 13, 1936.

On October 5, 1938, Beverly married Esmé Catherine Bassett Thomas. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, about 1914. Her father was David James Thomas. Her mother was Agnes Williams.

Beverly died on November 19, 1991.

“Born near Perrytown, Ontario on 5 April 1846, son of Samuel Corbett (c1790-1880) and Margaret Ferguson (c1812-1887), he was educated at Ontario private schools and Victoria University (Toronto), graduating with a medical degree in 1867. He began practicing as a physician and surgeon at Perrytown, Ontario in 1867 and subsequently at Port Hope. He came to Manitoba in 1882 and continued to work as a physician. He was appointed a Dominion Health Officer in 1901. He was Grand Medical Examiner for the AOUW and President of the Winnipeg Sewer Deodorizing Company. He served as President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (1890-1890).

On 7 January 1904, he married Gertrude Ethel Sangster (1879-1961) of Port Perry, Ontario. They had three children: Kathleen Marie Corbett (b 1904), Dorothy Gertrude Corbett (b 1906), and Beverly W. Corbett. He was a member of the St. Charles Country Club, Manitoba Medical Society, AF & AM, AOUW, and IOF. His home on Armstrong’s Point, Winnipeg was designed in 1905 by architect C. S. Bridgman.

He died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 9 September 1915.”
