Alder, Percy Hugh (1869-1956)

Percy Hugh Alder was a grocer who lived at 1155 Denman Street in 1903. After that, he lived mostly in the West End until 1922. He operated a grocery store at various locations in the West End, including 1084 Denman Street from 1904 to 1906, and 1094 Denman Street from 1908 to 1909 and 1917 to 1922. In 1920, the grocery business was called “British Supply Company.”

He was born in Camberwell, London, England on April 17, 1869. His father was Henry Alder (1861-1932); his mother was Elizabeth Katherine (Kate) Staton (born about 1838-died before 1932).

Percy came to Canada in 1890. On June 2, 1897, in New Westminster, British Columbia, he married Mary Jane Heard. She was born on December 25, 1873, in Stirling, Ontario. Her father was Robert Heard (1849-1939); her mother was Ann Gould (1850-1910).

Percy died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 30, 1956.

Mary Jane died in West Vancouver, on May 15, 1958.

Ivy Irene Staton Alder

Ivy Irene Staton Alder was born in Vancouver on May 23, 1899.

On May 23, 1924, in South Vancouver, British Columbia, she married Charles Durfee Harper. He was born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 25, 1887. His father was Charles Austin Harper; his mother was Anna Durfee Macmillan.

Charles died in Vancouver on October 24, 1938.

Ivy died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on January 16, 1977.

Leonard Oswald Alder

Leonard Oswald Alder was born in Vancouver on July 3, 1901. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1932.

He died in King County, Washington, in January 1981.

Frank Charles Percy Alder

Frank Charles Percy Alder was born in Vancouver on June 27, 1903. On February 14, 1929, in Vancouver, he married Ella Florence Noseworthy. She was born on February 27, 1910, in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Frank and Ella moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 1969.

Frank died in Nanaimo on March 11, 1970.

Ella died on January 14, 2005, in Nanaimo.

Edith Florence Alder

Edith Florence Alder was born in Vancouver on July 24, 1906.

On August 10, 1927, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, she married Gordon Edwards. He was born on January 6, 1884, in Birkinhead, Cheshire, England. His father was Samuel Edwards; his mother was Margaret Walker.

He became a carpenter and builder. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He was married before, possibly to Bessie Elizabeth Eastman. This marriage ended in divorce.

Gordon died in North Vancouver on April 9, 1974.

Edith died in Lantzville, British Columbia on November 23, 1990.

Alder, Ella Florence (Noseworthy) Mrs. Ella F. Alder passed away peacefully January 14th at the age of 94. Born February 27, 1910 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Ella was the youngest of five children who moved to British Columbia after 1912.

She married and raised her family in North and West Vancouver, moving to Nanaimo in 1969. Mrs. Alder also lived in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and on Gabriola Island. Predeceased by her husband Frank C. P. Alder, son Roderick (Joan) Alder. Mrs. Alder is loving remembered by daughters Carolyn (Ed) Chase, Elaine (Don. d. 1982) Schon, grandchildren Alan and Ian Schon, Diane (Schon) Brolsma, Doug, Steven and Russell Alder, Allison (Alder) LeBel, Shelley and Bryon Chase, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Ella was a sincere person who took delight in the world around her. She will be honoured forever, for her generosity, wisdom and wit. Mrs. Alder is resting at Sands Funeral Chapel in Nanaimo, One Newcastle Avenue, BC. View to be held at 9:00 am Wednesday January 19th, 2005 with service to follow at 10:00am.”
