Hoadley, Howland (1867-1929)

Howland Hoadley was a reporter who lived at 1076 Denman Street in 1908.

 

Family Background

Howland Hoadley was born on July 2, 1867 in or near New York City.

His parents were Russell Hotchkiss Hoadley (1834-1891) and Alice Howland Wesson (1844-1919). Russell Hoadley was an exporter and banker in New York City.

 

Howland’s Early Life

Howland attended Yale University, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He graduated in 1889.

The next year, he went to Valparaiso, Chile, where he stayed for over a year and he worked for Graham, Rowe & Co.

In December 1891, he went back to New York for a few months. Then he went to Australia to start a business for himself.

In August 1893, in Sydney, Australia, Howland married Theresa Adele Suter, who was a daughter of Otto Suter, of Melbourne. Soon afterwards, Howland set up a business in Melbourne.

Howland and Theresa went to North America, and they returned to Australia in April 1894.

The arrival notice above refers to a child who accompanied Howland and Theresa. No further information is available for Theresa or for Howland’s and Theresa’s child.

As well, there is little other information available for Howland in the late 1890s. In 1896, he was charged with stealing an overcoat and gloves.

Time in British Columbia

On October 10, 1906, in Victoria, British Columbia, describing himself as a bachelor, Howland married Elyzabeth Maude Smith. (She was often called “Maude.”) She was born in Toronto, Ontario about 1880. Her parents were William and Margaret Smith.

In March 1908, Howland published a short story called “To Expense – A Widow,” in Westward Ho! Magazine. In May 1908, he published a travel article called “Vancouver’s Playground,” also in Westward Ho! Magazine.

Howland and Maude were in Vancouver for only a short time.

 

To Oregon and Washington, D.C.

By 1910, Howland and Maude were living in Portland, Oregon.

From 1918 to 1922, they were living at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Howland was working with the U.S. army air force.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Howland and Maude were in the District of Columbia.

 

To California

In 1922, Howland and Maud went to California for an indefinite stay.

Maude died in San Francisco, California on June 4, 1930. (Although the newspapers described Howland and Maud as Australian, Howland had spent only a few years in Australia. There is no information to indicated that Maud had any direct connection with Australia.)

RUSSELL HOTCHKISS HOADLEY, exporter and banker, a native of New York, born Aug. 19, 1834, died at his home on West 49th street, June 9, 1891. David Hoadley, his father, an old-time merchant, here originated and was for many years president of The Panama Railway. Mr. Hoadley received a fair education at Betts Boarding School. In 1853, he went abroad for two years travel, joined the Seventh Regiment on his return, became by promotion major of the regiment, and served on Gen. Spicer’s staff during the riots in this city. Having inherited ability, he engaged in the South American trade in 1859, and in 1860 formed the partnership of Handy & Hoadley. Mr. Handy retired in 1865, when Hoadley, Eno & Co. succeeded. In 1869 the firm dissolved, after a successful career, during which they had transacted an immense business. Hoadley & Co. then succeeded, and carried on a banking and general commission business, with branches in New Orleans and Greytown, Nicaragua. He was a trustee of The Atlantic Mutual Insurance Co., The St. Joseph Lead Co., and The Hanover Fire Insurance Co. He amassed a large fortune, and withal enjoyed the reputation of being a man of integrity and generosity, as well as of great business ability. He was prominent in St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church, and a member of the Union, Union League, Riding, and many country clubs. In May, 1863, he married Alice, daughter of David Wesson and sister of one of Mr. Hoadley’s partners. Their children are Edith Howland, Russell Hotchkiss, and Charles Wesson Hoadley.
