According to the name listing in the 1906 Vancouver directory, Charles Hoy had a bakery at 700 Denman Street in 1906. (It appears that the name listing may be in error. For many years the Vancouver street directory showed the bakery at 740 Denman Street.)

In 1906, Charles Hoy lived at 742 Denman Street.

Charles’s son, Archibald Amery Hoy, was at 742 Denman Street from 1907 to 1909.

Another son, Walter James Hoy, was at 847 Park Road in 1907 and 1908 and at 1898 Alberni Street in 1909.

From 1908 to 1913, there was a Hoy and Sons Bakery at 740 Denman Street. In 1914, Shelly Brothers briefly took over the location. (Further information appears on the page for Shelly Brothers.)

Early Life in Ontario

Charles Hoy was born in Kingston, Ontario on October 16, 1846. His parents were James Hoy (1805–1878) and Mary Ann Allen (probably 1819–1898).

Charles worked as a baker for most of his life.

On January 2, 1871, in Ottawa, Ontario, Charles married Sarah Clark. She was born in Nepean, Ontario about 1849. Her parents were John Clark and Sarah Worth.

Sarah died in Ottawa on November 21, 1874. She was buried in Merivale United Cemetery in Nepean, Ontario (now part of the City of Ottawa).

On April 30, 1877, in Ottawa, Charles married Elizabeth McLaughlin. (It appears that she was born Elizabeth Lavinia Kitchener. The marriage registration said that her middle name was “Amelia”; as well, someone crossed out her father’s surname and wrote “Hitchence.”)
