Justin Lee Skene was a building contractor and architect. He lived at 1019 Gilford Street in 1915 and 1916.

Early Life

Justin Lee Skene was born on November 12, 1872, in Derinda, Illinois. His parents were James Skene and Nancy Walcott.

On July 3, 1895, in Klemme, Hancock County, Iowa, he married Grace Belle Merrick. She was born in Floy County, Iowa, on February 22, 1876. Her parents were H. N. Merrick and Lucinda (or Lucene) A. Smith.

In 1899 Justin and Grace were living in Garner, Hancock County, Iowa.

In 1900, Justin was an architect in Sioux City, Iowa.

To Canada

The Skenes arrived in Canada in 1905. At first they settled in Victoria, where Justin worked on a series of prominent buildings (sometimes in conjunction with George Dillon Curtis (1868-1940): http://dictionaryofarchitectsincanada.org/node/1008).

(As Jean Milne has pointed out, the Alexander Duncan McRae residence, which appears in the Daily Colonist article, above, is still present in 2018. It is called “Hycroft,” and since 1962 it has been the home of the University Women’s Club of Vancouver: https://www.uwcvancouver.ca/our-house/.)

Justin was in Who’s Who in Western Canada, 1911 (although his first name appeared as “Justice,” rather than “Justin”).

In the 1911 Canada census the family was living at 1336 Barclay Street in Vancouver.

In 1915 and 1916 they were at 1019 Gilford Street in Vancouver.

To Seattle

In 1917 the Skenes were in Seattle, Washington. Justin was a building contractor.

Lawsuit

In 1918, Justin and his business partner, John Sheridan Christie, were defendants in a lawsuit that arose from construction on the Hotel Vancouver.

C. P. R. Hotel, Vancouver, B.C., about 1917; Vancouver City Archives, CVA 677-21; https://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/c-p-r-hotel-vancouver-b-c-2.

The firm of National Ironworks was to supply louvres and skylights for the hotel. After the Royal Bank acquired the interests of National Ironworks, the bank sued Justin Skene and John Sheridan Christie.

At the end of the trial, the lawyers for the parties apparently had agreed that a referee would decide the actual amount of damages. Instead, the lawyers agreed to a form of consent order that prevented either party from appealing.

Mr. Skene and Mr. Christie applied to the court to set aside the order.

The court agreed to set aside the order. The British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada upheld this decision.

Later Years

The Skene family was in Victoria at the time of the 1921 Canada census.

Justin died in Seattle on July 28, 1936.

Grace died in Los Angeles County, California, on July 22, 1950.

Justin and Grace had the following children.

Kenneth Merrick Skene

Kenneth Merrick Skene was born in Garner, Hancock County, Iowa, on September 27, 1899.

He worked as a contractor.

On December 27, 1926, in Vancouver, he married Edith Elsie Campbell, who was born in Vancouver on February 27, 1903.

Edith’s father was William Thomas Campbell (1867-1944), a retail clothing merchant who lived at 1935 Comox Street from 1901 to 1907. Edith’s mother was Charlotte (“Lottie”) Hunt (1879-1944). (Further information appears on the page for William Thomas Campbell: https://westendvancouver.wordpress.com/biographies-a-m/biographies-c/campbell-william-thomas-1867-1944/.)

This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on November 30, 1939.

Edith moved to California, where she applied to become a naturalized United States citizen. She died in Alameda County, California, on July 16, 1951.

Kenneth died in Vancouver on April 21, 1959.

Donald Lee Skene

Donald Lee Skene was born in Seattle, Washington, on June 14, 1901.

It appears that he spent much of his life in incarceration. In the 1921 Canada census, and in the 1930 and 1940 United States censuses, he was in prison.

In 1924, Justin and Donald Skene were witnesses in the prosecution of Joseph Bayley for illegal possession of liquor.

Curtis Palmer Skene

Curtis Palmer Skene was born in Vancouver on March 15, 1914.

On December 2, 1939, in Washington State, he married Mildred Sedgwick.

Curtis died in Orange County, California, on July 31, 1971.

They lived in Seattle, Washington.

John died in Seattle on February 21, 1933.
