Betsworth, Samuel Butler (1874-1949)

Samuel Butler Betsworth was a contractor and builder. He lived at the rear of 847 Park Road in 1908.

He was born on October 13, 1874, in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. His father was Edwin Betsworth (1840-1928); his mother was Liza Butler.

Samuel married Anna Louise Smith. She was born on April 25, 1880 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her father was Patrick Smith; her mother was Grace Irwin.

Samuel died in Vancouver on August 31, 1949. He was buried in Forest Lawn Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Anna died in Vancouver on March 21, 1978. She was buried in Forest Lawn Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Lillian Kathleen Betsworth

Lillian Kathleen Betsworth was born in St. James – Assiniboia, Manitoba, on June 20, 1909. She became a school teacher. On July 8, 1933, in Vancouver, she married Clifford Archibald Drummond. He was born in Holland, Manitoba, about 1903. His father was William Drummond; his mother was Maud Ferris.

Lillian died in Vancouver on July 9, 1987.

 

Dorothy Hazel Betsworth

Dorothy Hazel Betsworth was born in Charleswood, Manitoba, on July 12, 1913. In 1940, She married John Williamson Smith (1910-1959). He was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.

Dorothy died in Winnipeg on April 18, 2002. She was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.

Dorothy returned to her teaching career full time in 1959 after husband Jacks untimely death. Dorothy taught at several schools in Winnipeg until her retirement. Dorothys father Samuel was one of the pioneer residents of Charleswood and Betsworth Street was named in his honour. Dorothy remained active for many years in the Charleswood Historical Society, her high school friends bridge club, the English speaking union and the Retired Teachers Association. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery at a later date. Deepest thanks and appreciation is extended to the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home for providing Dorothy with superior medical care and loving attention.
