Bayfield, Edward (1847-1926)

Edward Bayfield was a lawyer. He lived at 1901 Barclay Street in 1909.

He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on October 28, 1847. His father was Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield (1795-1885); his mother was Fanny Amelia Wright (about 1814-1891).

Edward married Caroline Mary Peters, who was born on March 25, 1848, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Her parents were James H. Peters and Mary Cunard.

The Bayfields arrived in Vancouver in late 1907.

Edward died in Vancouver on December 28, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Caroline Mary Bayfield died in Vancouver on June 18, 1929. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Edward Bayfield had the following children.

 

Henry Arthur Bayfield

Henry Arthur Bayfield was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on June 19, 1873. He was an engineer.

He married Mary Vear in Quebec. She was born in Quebec on November 1, 1875.

While he was working as the supervising engineer in charge building the government’s assembling plant at Ogden Point in Victoria, British Columbia, he died suddenly on February 12, 1918. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary died in Vancouver on January 13, 1957. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Geoffrey Edward Bayfield

Geoffrey Edward Bayfield was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on November 14, 1875.

He went to Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, then to McGill University, where he received a degree in medicine in 1898. After he became a physician; he practiced in New Brunswick as well as in the Peace River district of British Columbia. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. After the war he spent several years on the northern coast of British Columbia, after which he retired to West Vancouver, British Columbia.

On November 15, 1898, in Boston, Massachusetts, he married Annie Hyndman. Her parents were Charles and Mary E. Hyndman. This marriage ended in divorce.

On September 13, 1925, in Vancouver, Geoffrey married Olive Turner. She was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, on April 5, 1889. Her father was Charles Turner; her mother was Clara Cates.

Geoffrey died in Vancouver on November 29, 1947. He was buried in Mountain View Cemtery in Vancouver.

Olive died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 8, 1980.

 

Francis James Bayfield

Francis James Bayfield was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on March 1, 1876. He was a lawyer.

On April 13, 1913, in Vancouver, he married Jeanie Isabel Bryson Rochester. She was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 20, 1882. Her father was John Young Rochester; her mother was Jennie Cerena Bryson.

Francis died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 26, 1952. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery.

Jeanie died in North Vancouver on July 2, 1961. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery.

 

Thomas Frederick Bayfield

Thomas Frederick Bayfield was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on February 10, 1878.

He became a medical doctor. In 1908, he had a flat at Russell Priory in Russell Square, London, England.

He may have died in Liverpool, England in September quarter 1936.

 

Mary Dorothea Bayfield

Mary Dorothea Bayfield was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on January 12, 1881.

On December 19, 1918, in Vancouver, Mary married Philip Broke Freeland. He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on November 30, 1877. His father was Lieutenant-Colonel Russell George Freeland; his mother was Fanny Gertrude Mary Bayfield.

Philip was a mining engineer. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, on December 19, 1949. He was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Saanich, British Columbia.

Mary died in Victoria on January 28, 1967. She was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Saanich.

Philip Broke Freeland was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., on November 30th, 1878. As a child he went to England with his parents and was educated there. On graduating from the Cambourne School of Mines, Cornwall, in 1901, he went to Arizona and spent four years there working as assayer at the Sultan mine, Grey Eagle mine, and Rapid Transit mine.

He first came to British Columbia in 1906 and worked for a year as sampler at the Hall mine smelter at Nelson.

From 1907 to 1910 he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as transitman, in 1911 as locating engineer on Sooke Water Supply, in 1912 as mining engineer for Cartwright and Matheson on a reconnaissance survey from Bella Coola to Fort George, and in 1912 and 1913 as engineer in charge of Kallapa mine, V.I. In 1913 he was engineer in charge of construction at the Scott Goldie quarry, Burrard Inlet.

From 1914 to 1917 he was employed by the Granby Company at Phoenix as mining engineer and surveyor.

In May, 1917, he joined the staff of the Department of Mines as one of the original group of Resident Engineers. From 1917 to 1935 he was Resident Mining Engineer for the Southern Mineral Survey District, No. 4. The headquarters for the district were at Grand Forks until 1931, when they were moved to Penticton. In 1932 Mr. Freeland became Resident Mining Engineer for the Central Mineral Survey District, No. 3, also; the headquarters for the combined districts were at Penticton.

In 1935 he moved to Victoria as consultant to the Department of Mines and was appointed Chief Mining Engineer in 1937.

He retired from the staff of the Department of Mines as Chief Mining Engineer on March 30th, 1943.

He joined the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1918 and served as councillor from 1946 to 1948.

He was one. of the original members of the Association of Professional Engineers, and served as member of Council from 1938 to 1940, and in 1943; as vice-president in 1941; and as president of the association in 1942.

His death occurred at 1050 St. Patrick Street, Victoria, on Monday, December 19th, 1949, aged 71.

He is survived by his wife in Victoria and a sister and two brothers in England.
