Dean, William Armstrong (1859-1942)

William Armstrong Dean was a bookkeeper, sailor and real estate broker. He lived at 1909 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1906.

William Armstrong Dean was born in Quebec (possibly in Montreal), on January 29, 1859. His father was Robert Dean (who died in 1857). His mother was Jane Armstrong (about 1828-1897).

From 1861 to 1891, William was living with his mother in Montreal. In 1881, he was a sailor. In 1891 he was a commercial traveller, selling fancy goods.

By 1891, William was married to Louise, who was born on July 13, 1867. (According to the death records of William’s son, Wilfred, Louise’s surname may have been Richards.)

When William first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1899-1900, he was an agent for the Metallic Roofing Company of Toronto. He was living on Beach Avenue.

William lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1899 to 1902 Beach Avenue (unnumbered) (probably 1909 Beach Avenue)
1903 1909 Beach Avenue (occupation logger)
1904 1909 Beach Avenue (occupation SS Kestral)
1905 and 1906 1909 Beach Avenue (occupation real estate)
1907 possibly Waverley Hotel (bookkeeper) or 304 West Cordova Street (logger)
1908 possibly 888 Burrard Street (BC Telephone Co.) or Waverley Hotel (bricklayer)

In 1909, William appeared on a Vancouver voters’ list which said that he was “reported absent from the district.”

By 1910, William, Louise, and their two sons were living in Tacoma, Washington. William was a ship’s officer.

It appears that William became a naturalized United States citizen, since his son, Wilfred declared that he had been naturalized through his father’s naturalization.

William may have died in Sumner, Washington on October 6, 1942.

No further information is available for Louise.

William and Louise had the following children.

John Percival Dean

John Percival Dean was born in Quebec on July 29, 1891.

In 1901 and 1910 he was living with his parents.

He later went to San Francisco, California, where he became an assistant manager with Dodwell and Company, a British shipping company that had branches in several Pacific Ocean ports, including San Francisco.

John registered with the United States military draft system.

On November 10, 1917, in Tacoma, Washington, John married Helen Marie Dow. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 29, 1895. Her father was Herbert Manchester Dow (born 1856). Her mother was Sarah (Sadie) Crandall Lyle (1865-1960).

Helen Marie Dow’s Family Background

Helen’s father, Herbert Manchester Dow, was born in 1856 in Cape Elizabeth, near Portland, Maine. By 1884 he had travelled to Honolulu, Hawaii. On April 25, 1884, he married Sarah Crandall Lyle, who was born on April 15, 1865, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Honolulu Daily Bulletin, April 26, 1884, page 3, column 1; http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82016412/1884-04-26/ed-1/seq-3/

In 1885, Herbert was a school teacher in Honolulu. By 1900, he was a clerk in the Honolulu police department.

In 1903 he became a member of the Hawaiian Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, which was associated with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

About 1904, state officials charged Herbert with embezzlement, after they discovered that he had been lending out bail money. However, he was not convicted, because the court held that the bail money was not the property of the Territory of Hawaii.

On November 7, 1904, in a separate hearing, the court declared that Herbert was bankrupt.

About the same time, he became a candidate to be the warden of Oahu prison, and he gathered a list of people who supported him.

By early January in 1905, Herbert applied for a discharge from bankruptcy.

Sometime later, the Dow family went back to the mainland United States. At the time of the 1910 United States census, they were living in Portland, Maine. Herbert was a school teacher.

By 1915, Sarah was back in Hawaii, where she sued Herbert for divorce.

About 1916, Sarah moved to San Francisco, California. By 1920, she was working as a practical nurse. It appears that she lived in California through the 1940s and 1950s, and that she died in 1960.

It is not clear what happened to Herbert Dow.

John Percival Dean and Helen Marie Dow

In 1920, John and Helen were living in San Francisco. John was an accountant and Helen was a stenographer.

It appears that John and Helen were divorced between 1920 and 1930.

In 1930, John was married to Marie, who was born in the late 1890s (possibly on January 12, 1898) in Washington State. John and Marie were living in San Francisco. John was working as an accountant for the Edison Distributing Corporation.

It appears that John died in Riverside, California, on April 26, 1975. Mary may have died in Los Angeles, California, on August 1, 1998.

Helen continued to work as a stenographer. In 1930 and 1940 she was living in San Francisco. It appears that she did not re-marry. She died in San Francisco on February 1, 1979.

Wilfred Arthur Dean

Wilfred Arthur Dean was born in Quebec on October 16, 1892.

In 1901 he was living with his parents in Vancouver. In 1910, he was with his parents in Tacoma, Washington.

On January 25, 1917, in Seattle, Wilfred married Evelyn E. Bloom, who was living in Olympia, Washington. It appears that she was born in Washington on March 21, 1893.

Wilfred enlisted with the United States military draft system during the First World War.

In 1920, Wilfred and Evelyn were living Tacoma. Wilfred was a commercial art designer.

In 1930, Wilfred was still married. At the time of the 1930 United States census he was on a list of patients at United States Public Health Service Hospital Number 24, in San Mateo, California.

It appears that Wilfred and Evelyn were divorced between 1930 and 1940.

In 1940, Wilfred was in the Veterans Administration Facility in San Mateo.

In 1940, Evelyn was in Oakland, California, living with her mother, Blanche E. Bloom. Evelyn was working as a bookbinder.

Wilfred died in Santa Clara, California, on July 18, 1966. He was buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.

It appears that Evelyn died on September 1, 1988, and that she was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla, Washington.
