“I am tracing my McCool heritage which I have back to Ireland (Londonderry) through the name Thomas McCool (1821-1874), wife Jane, Son Thomas Stewart McCool (1851-?), wife Mary Jane Caswell (1852-1936) and their children (all from New York City) Thomas Herbert McCool (1882-1960), Ernest Stewart McCool (my grandfather, 1879-c.1911), William Percy McCool (1888-?), Ida May McCool (1875-1890) and Olive I. McCool (1885-?).

Thomas Stewart McCool traveled to Toronto, Ontario, Canada possibly in 1871 and then to New York City in 1888 or 1889.

By the way, my real last name should be McCool except for a suspicious name change (and relocation) by my Grandfather Ernest Stewart McCool to Herbert Edward Garfield between 1902 and 1904.

“Appeal from a judgment of the superior court for Spokane County, Kennan, J., entered June 17, 1912, upon findings in favor of the plaintiff, after a trial on the merits before the court without a jury, in an action on an indemnity bond. Affirmed.

MORRIS, J. – Action upon a fidelity bond, indemnifying respondent against loss to the extent of $1,000 by reason of dishonesty of H.E. Garfield, its bookkeeper and cashier. The cause was tried by the court without a jury, and judgment entered sustaining recovery, from which this appeal is taken. . . .

The total amount embezzled by Garfield was $2,468.44. Of this amount $897.48 was embezzled prior to February 1, 1910, the date of the bond, and $1,571.01 subsequent to that time. When respondent learned of this shortage in July, 1910, it demanded security from Garfield, and Garfield executed an agreement, and as part thereof placed the deed to certain lands in escrow. . . .

We find no reason for disturbing this judgment, and it is affirmed.”

Garfield Families Newsletter, April 2003, http://garfieldsinamerica.homestead.com/April2003.html

“Dick Garfield,

I want to thank you for sending your monthly newsletter. A year ago I wrote to you about my family history. At that time I wrote:

For the record, my name is Jeffrey Stuart Garfield, born 4/27/46 to Herbert Edward Stuart Garfield (2/13/1906-7/14/1980) and Margaret Dougan Garfield (12/25/1917-1/20/2002). My father’s parents were from New York City where they eloped in the late 1800’s. His name was Herbert Edward Garfield (died about 1909 near Spokane, WA) and he was married to Isabel Hughes (died 1943 in Seattle). They left New York for Seattle (via Olympia, WA) about 1900.

I would like to contribute something more but I am dead ended prior to 1900. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might proceed in finding the New York City connection?

Other than that all I can do is keep reading your good stories about other Garfields. Again, thanks for the good work.

Jeff Garfield.”
