Clarke, John Lyster (1872-1960)

John Lyster Clark (or Clarke) was a stationery engineer. He lived at 1816 Pendrell Street from 1910 to 1933.

John was born on April 13, 1872, in Billericay District, Essex, England. His father was John Trist Clarke (about 1825-1881). His mother was Serena Arabella Goodrich Hereford (1843-1932).

John Lyster Clarke served in the South African War. He arrived in Canada about 1910.

John worked as an engineer until he retired around 1940. He never married.

He died in Vancouver on October 13, 1960. He was buried in the Field of Honor in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Serena Arabella Goodrich Hereford

John’s mother, Serena, lived at 1155 Denman Street from 1910 to 1913. She was born in India on October 11, 1843, and was christened in Trichinopoly (Tiruchirappalli), Madras, on September 3, 1844. Serena’s father was William Hereford. Her mother was Anna Matilda Peterson.

On June 27, 1861, in Tranquebar (later called Tharangambadi), Madras, Serena married John Trist Clarke, who was with the Madras Staff Corps. He was born about 1825. His father was Richard Clarke.

John Trist Clarke and his family later moved to England. John died in Bedford, England in 1881.

Serena continued to live in England until about 1910. She moved to Vancouver and lived with her son, John Lyster Clarke. Serena died in Vancouver on May 28, 1932. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Besides John Lyster Clarke, Serena had at least two other children living in British Columbia.

Edward Clarke

According to the Vancouver Province’s 1932 article on Serena Arabella Goodrich Clarke, Edward Clarke was a surveyor who worked with the Canadian Pacific Railway’s team that surveyed the City of Vancouver. Around 1892 he was with a surveying companion near Squamish. They were both lost, and they died in the hills. [This event may have occurred at a different time. There was a British Columbia coroner’s inquest in 1887 relating to an Edward Clarke who drowned accidentally. It is not clear if this is the same Edward Clarke.]

Mary Serena Clarke

Mary Serena Clarke was born in Singapore on October 24, 1863. She had arrived in British Columbia by about 1891. She married Henry Leslie Good, a customs house officer, in British Columbia on May 7, 1892.

Henry was born in England on October 16, 1863. His parents were Henry Berkeley Good and Eliza Lambert.

Henry died in Nanaimo, British Columbia on February 28, 1934.

Mary died in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 28, 1955.

Survived by one daughter, Mrs. H.L. Good of Nanaimo and three sons, John L. of Vancouver; also Richard and Campbell of South Africa. Funeral Tuesday, May 31st, at 2 p.m., from the T. Edwards Co’s chapel, 10th Ave. and Granville St., Rev. G.H. Dowker officiating. Interment in Ocean View Burial Park.”

“Mrs. Serena Clarke Died on Saturday: Widow of Indian Army Officer Passes Away at Age of 89,” Vancouver Province, May 30, 1932, page 3: “An interesting character and picturesque personality who had seen stirring days in India passed away Saturday in the person of Mrs. Serena Clarke. She had reached the age of 89 and was a charming old lady of gracious manner – one of the “old school” in the highest sense of the term. Death occurred at her residence, 1816 Pendrell Street.

Mrs. Clarke was born in India, of a military family, and she married col. John Trist Clarke of the Madras Staff Corps. She knew the life of camp and cantonment intimately and had lived through colorful pages of Anglo-Indian history. Her husband predeceased her many years ago.

Born in 1843, she was a child during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. She recalled how she was hidden in churches guarded by “old men”—the younger men being away in the fighting lines. Her memory of the Mutiny was a succession of flights and hidings.

Mrs. Clarke had a link with pioneer Vancouver. Her oldest son, Edward, came here in the ‘80s with the C.P.R. Hamilton party and helped to survey the city. In 1892 Edward was on a survey in the Squamish region and, with a companion, was lost and perished in the hills.

Mrs. Clarke had been a resident of Vancouver for twenty-three years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. H.L. Good, well-known resident of Nanaimo, a son, John, in Vancouver, and two sons, Richard and Campbell, in South Africa, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the T. Edwards Co. Rev. G.H. Dowker will officiate, and the remains will be interred in Ocean View Burial Park.”
