Thompson, William Edmund (1858-1928)

William Edmund Thompson was a lawyer and a real estate and mining agent. He lived at 821 Denman Street from 1900 to 1906.

He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on November 3, 1858. His father was Philip Nairn Thompson (1817-1887); his mother was Louisa Perkins (c.1825.-1875). Philip Nairn Thompson came from Newcastle, Northumberland in England. He came to the Ottawa area about 1838, where he operated a flour mill and a sawmill. He was later a local director of the Bank of Commerce, and he owned large timber limits on the Gatineau River.

Philip’s wife, Louisa, died on December 7, 1875; she was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario. On June 21, 1877, Philip married Elizabeth Hueston, a widow originally from Montreal. Philip died on April 2, 1887; he was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

William Edmund Thompson’s education included classes at University College in Toronto, where he was a student in 1881-1882. On November 19, 1888, he was called to the bar in Ontario.

On May 2, 1893, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Bertha Eveleen Grantham. She was born on March 1, 1874 in Jersey, Channel Islands. Her father was Charles Henry Grantham (1849-possibly 1908); her mother was Sarah Eveleen Myles (1849-1925). On December 17, 1895, William and Bertha’s only child, Gertrude Evelyn Thompson, was born in Toronto.

By 1898, William Edmund Thompson had become a lawyer in Vancouver. The 1898 BC Voters list shows him at 504 Howe Street, along with his brothers Charles Albert Thompson (customs officer; 1862-1917) and Philip Nairn Thompson (gentleman; 1853-1934). In 1900, William continued to be a lawyer, and he was also a mining and real estate agent.

William and Bertha’s marriage ended in the early 1900s. On August 14, 1910, in Vancouver, Bertha married Charles Stephen Vaughan Branch, who was the local manager of the Sun Life Assurance Co. Charles was born on October 12, 1871 in Montserratt, British West Indies [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montserrat]. Charles died on January 12, 1957, in San Diego, California. Bertha died in San Diego, California, on November 2, 1963.

William’s second marriage was to Maude Templeton. She was born October 8, 1881, in Belleville, Ontario. Her father was William Templeton (1853-1898), who was mayor of Vancouver in 1897; her mother was Clementina Hawley. (1860-1943; Clementina married Charles Parsons in Vancouver in 1906). William and Maude moved to California about 1910.

William Edmund Thompson died of cancer in Los Angeles, California, on January 14, 1928. He was buried on May 18, 1928, in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. Maude died in Vancouver on April 15, 1966.

William Edmund Thompson and Bertha Eveleen Grantham had one child.

Gertrude Evelyn Thompson

Gertrude was born in Toronto, Ontario, on December 17, 1895. She married Gordon William Bell (born April 15, 1891, Westmount, Quebec). Gordon served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and he was later a merchant in Montreal, Quebec. Gertrude died in San Diego, California, on August 18, 1973.

Robert Thompson (brother of William Edmund Thompson)

Robert Thompson was a brother of William Edmund Thompson. It appears that he married Maggie McConnell in Ottawa, Ontario, on March 2, 1880. Maggie was born about 1860. Her parents were Richard and Harriet McConnell. Robert may have died in Vancouver on May 23, 1904.

William Edmund Thompson was one of several people who owned some land. The land owners arranged to acquire shares in a company that was about to be incorporated, and to transfer the land to the company instead of paying cash for the shares. The landowners had acquired the land for much less than the price that the company was to pay. The court concluded that the shares were fully paid up.

    • Hello Catherine,

Thank you for sharing this interesting information on Robert Thompson. I have added a note on Robert Thompson, which I hope is accurate, although it is quite short.

      Thanks again,

      Robert
