William Edmund Thompson was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on November 3, 1858. His parents were Philip Nairn Thompson (1817-1887) and Louisa Perkins (about 1825-1875).

Philip Nairn Thompson was from Newcastle, Northumberland in England. He came to the Ottawa area about 1838, where he operated a flour mill and a sawmill. He was later a local director of the Bank of Commerce, and he owned large timber limits on the Gatineau River.

Philip’s wife, Louisa, died on December 7, 1875. She was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario.

Marriage to Bertha Grantham

On May 2, 1893, in Toronto, Ontario, William married Bertha Eveleen Grantham. She was born on March 1, 1874 in Jersey, Channel Islands. Her parents were Charles Henry Grantham (1849-1908) and Sarah Eveleen Myles (1849-1925).

Toronto Globe, May 5, 1908, page 12, column 7 [best available copy].

Sarah Grantham died on January 7, 1925.

Toronto Globe, January 8, 1925, page 10, column 2.

On December 17, 1895, William and Bertha’s only child, Gertrude Eveleen Thompson, was born in Toronto.

To Vancouver

By 1898, William had become a lawyer in Vancouver. The 1898 BC Voters list showed him at 504 Howe Street, along with his brothers Charles Albert Thompson (customs officer; 1862-1917) and Philip Nairn Thompson (gentleman; 1853-1934).

In 1900, William was still a lawyer; he was also a mining and real estate agent.

By 1906, William’s and Bertha’s marriage was ending. In 1907, Bertha hired Nevada lawyers to sue William for divorce on the grounds of desertion and cruelty.

Nevada State Journal (Reno, Nevada), November 26, 1907, page 5, column 6.

On August 14, 1910, in Vancouver, Bertha married Charles Stephen Vaughan Branch, who was the local manager of the Sun Life Assurance Co. Charles was born on October 12, 1871 in Montserratt, British West Indies [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montserrat]. [Note: the 1908 death notice for Bertha’s father, Charles Grantham, referred to Bertha as “Mrs. Branch,” even though Bertha’s marriage was not until 1910. Immigration documents from 1908 also called her “Bertha Branch.”]

Charles Branch died on January 12, 1957, in San Diego, California.

Bertha died in San Diego on November 2, 1963.

William’s Marriage to Maude Templeton

On April 21, 1910, in London, England, William married Maude Templeton Baxter, who was the widow of Alexander Jardine Baxter.

Vancouver Province, April 21, 1910, page 5, column 4.

Maude was born October 8, 1881, in Belleville, Ontario. Her parents were William Templeton (1853-1898) and Clementina Hawley (1860-1943). William Templeton was the  mayor of Vancouver in 1897; he died in 1898, shortly after he failed to be re-elected as mayor. In 1906, Clementina married Charles Parsons in Vancouver.

On December 31, 1903, in Vancouver, Maude married Alexander Jardine Baxter. He was a former sports writer who was the secretary of the Vancouver Tourist Association.

Vancouver Province, December 31, 1903, page 3, column 5.

Alexander died of abdominal tuberculosis on March 15, 1905, while he was visiting his parents in Thessalon, Ontario.

To California

William and Maude moved to California about 1910. They lived at 414 South Manhattan Place in Los Angeles. William worked as a real estate broker.

William died of cancer in Los Angeles on January 14, 1928. He was buried on May 18, 1928, in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Vancouver Province, January 12, 1928, page 1, column 4.

[Note: The obituary above states that William built the Thompson block just west of the Standard Bank Building, at the southwest corner of Hastings Street and Richards Street. This seems unlikely, since the building west of the Standard Bank Building was the “Innes-Thompson Block,” which dated from about 1890. William did not arrive in Vancouver until about 1898. However, William’s brother, Philip Nairn Thompson (1853-1934), was in Vancouver by about 1889 or 1890, so he may have been associated with the building on Hastings Street.]

The land owners arranged to acquire shares in a company that was about to be incorporated, and to transfer the land to the company instead of paying cash for the shares. The landowners had acquired the land for much less than the price that the company was to pay. The court concluded that the shares were fully paid up. 1. I was very interested to read this. William Edward Thompson had a brother named Robert Thompson who my father was named after. Robert was my grandfather’s father. Robert also left Ottawa to live and eventually die in Vancouver

Thank you for sharing this interesting information on Robert Thompson. I have added a note on Robert Thompson, which I hope is accurate, although it is quite short.

      Thanks again,

      Robert
