Leader, Addie (about 1893-after 1929)

Henderson’s Vancouver Directory, 1920, page 709.

According to the Vancouver directories, Mrs. Addie Leader was the widow of Arthur J. Leader. However, it appears that Addie and Arthur were divorced.

Addie Leader lived at 1178 Denman Street in 1919 and at 1180 Denman Street in 1920 and 1921. She operated a confectionery at 1180 Denman Street  in 1920.

From 1923 to 1929 she was at 1773 Davie Street.

Family Background

According to the 1921 Canada census, Addie was born about 1893 in the United States; both of her parents were also born in the United States.

It appears that Addie was born Alice Addie Stanfield in Illinois about 1884.

Marriage to Arthur Leader

On May 30, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois, Addie married Arthur Joseph Leader, who was born in Quebec, Canada on February 10, 1883.

To Canada

Arthur and Ada came to Canada about 1910, and Ada became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1913.

Arthur J. Leader lived in Vancouver starting in 1913. He was at 1261 Granville Street in 1913. In 1914, he was a travelling inspector (or perhaps an instructor) with the Sleeping and Dining Car department of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He lived at the following addresses:

19131261 Granville Street
1914Newport Hotel [Newport Rooms: 1261 Granville Street]
1915Number 3, 1778 Davie Street
1916Number 9, 1785 Davie Street
19171046 Granville Street
1918Number 102, 789 Granville Street

At the time of the 1921 Canada census, Addie was living with Caroline Pattie, who was born in England about 1891, and who came to Canada about 1906. The census said that Addie and Caroline were sisters, although Caroline’s parents were both described as being born in England, so perhaps the the census entry was incorrect.

No further information is available for Addie at this time.

Caroline Pattie

It appears that Caroline Pattie was born Caroline Poole in England on January 24, 1887. She married David Robertson Pattie in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 29, 1913. David was born on September 20, 1888, in Tayport, Fife, Scotland. His parents were David Pattie and Sena Johnson.

In 1915 he was a clerk at the Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. In 1920, David was the manager of the No Knocks Accessory Company, a Vancouver business that sold automobile accessories.

By 1922, David was a printer with Joseph W. Boyd in Vancouver. He worked as a clerk and accountant, and he was the proprietor of a series of small businesses until he retired about 1967.

Caroline died in Vancouver on November 7, 1965.

David married Grace Irwin Collins.

David died in Vancouver on December 18, 1969.

David and Caroline had a son named David Ross Pattie. He was born about 1916 in British Columbia. About 1953, he married Rosamund Wallace Neill (1918-1983). David Ross Pattie died in Vancouver on February 24, 1994.
