Lawrance, Frederick George (1844-1922)

Frederick George Lawrance was a cabinet maker who lived at 1020 Denman Street in 1909.

 

Family Background

Frederick George Lawrance was born in Wargrave, Berkshire, England, on July 18, 1844. His parents were Thomas Lawrance (1819-possibly 1896) and Ruth Cox (1819-1902). Thomas Lawrance was a carpenter.

The Lawrance family moved from England to Canada about 1854, and they settled in Guelph, Upper Canada.

In 1871, Frederick was working as a carpenter and living with his parents in Guelph.

 

Marrage to Louisa Stark

On March 12, 1873, in Fergus, Ontario, Frederick married Louisa Florence Stark. She was born on October 21, 1853, in Lynton, England. Her parents were Robert Thomas Stark (1823-1875) and Joanna Marion Leworthy (1823-1880).

In 1881, 1891, and 1901 the Lawrance family was living in Guelph. Frederick’s occupation was “carpenter” or “woodworker.”

 

To Vancouver

The Lawrance family first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909.

Later Life

Frederick continued to work as a carpenter for much of his time in Vancouver.

He died in Vancouver on July 31, 1922. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Louisa died in Vancouver on October 13, 1949.

Frederick and Louisa had the following children.

 

Albert William Lawrance

Albert William Lawrance was born in Guelph, Ontario, on December 26, 1873. He worked as an upholster.

On November 14, 1899, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Alice Mary Johnson. She was born in Ontario on November 24, 1878. Her parents were William Henry and Ellen Johnson.

Albert died in Toronto on June 26, 1925.

 

Louisa Maud Lawrance

Louisa Maud Lawrance was born in Guelph, Ontario, on November 21, 1875.

She never married.

She died in Vancouver on March 9, 1967.

She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Florence Stark Lawrance

Florence Stark Lawrance was born on October 21, 1877, in Guelph, Ontario.

On August 20, 1902, in Vancouver, Florence married William Page, who was a merchant and manufacturer’s agent. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, on January 21, 1858. His parents were Charles Page and Harriet Ann Thwaits.

William died in Vancouver on November 8, 1946. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Florence died in Vancouver on September 2, 1961. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

 

Harry Walter Lawrance

Harry Walter Lawrance was born in Guelph, Ontario, on January 2, 1882. He died in Guelph on January 13, 1883.

 

Ethel May Lawrance

Ethel May Lawrance was born on February 1, 1884, in Guelph, Ontario.

On February 18, 1911, in Toronto, Ontario, Ethel married Edward Everett Williams, who was a manager. He later served during with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He later became a manufacturer’s agent.

It appears that Ethel died in 1965.

Edward died on February 17, 1971, in Ontario (probably in Ottawa).

 

Frederick Nello Lawrance

Frederick Nello Lawrance was born in Guelph, Ontario, on March 14, 1887.

He worked as an accountant.

On November 27, 1913, in Vancouver, he married Ethel Gertrude Clarke. She was born on March 24, 1893, in Vancouver. Her parents were Harold Curtis Clarke (1863-1918) and Lillian Gertrude Victoria Campbell (1868-1953). Harold Clarke was a stationer.

Frederick owned a printing company.

Frederick died in Vancouver on January 18, 1956. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ethel later married Charles Edward Stocks (1884-1967), who was a woollen spinner.

Ethel died in Surrey, British Columbia, on April 30, 1971.

 

Roy Alfred Lawrance

Roy Alfred Lawrance was born on July 18, 1890, in Guelph, Ontario.

He worked as a bookkeeper in a bank, and later as a broker.

On November 21, 1918, in Vancouver, he married Grace Vivian Tulk. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, about 1894. Her parents were William John Tulk and Jessie Honeyborn. This marriage was dissolved at New Westminster, B.C. on February 17, 1939.

Roy continued to work as an accountant.

He died in Vancouver on March 14, 1962. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Thomas Edward Lawrance

Thomas Edward Lawrance was born in Guelph, Ontario on December 12, 1892.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He later worked as a lawyer.

Thomas never married.

He died in Vancouver on December 4, 1966. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

About one and twenty-five guests were present at the ceremonies attendant upon the marriage last evening of Miss Ethel Gertrude Clarke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold C. Clarke, to Mr. Frederick Nello Lawrance, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Lawrance, 1223 Georgia street. Rev. Ever Crummy, D.D., conducted the marriage service at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Clarke, 1246 Haro Street, Mr. Clarke giving away his daughter, who was attended by Mrs. Stuart Lane, her cousin, as matron of honor, Miss Greta Crandall as bridesmaid, and a little flower maid, Miss Louise Page, niece of the groom. Included in the entourage were also Masters Russell and Vernon Clarke, brothers of the bride, who, in pages’ court costume of white and royal purple, ushered the bridal party into the drawing room for the ceremony. . . .

Mr. Roy Lawrance was best man to his brother, and Mr. Thomas E. Lawrance and Mr. Stuart Lane acted as ushers. . . .

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrance, upon their return from Seattle, whither they have gone for their honeymoon, are to reside in Vernon. . . .”
