Robert William Gordon was a broker who lived at 1884 Haro Street in 1914 and 1915.

Robert William Gordon was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland on in 1844. His parents were Robert Gordon and Janet Johnstone.

In March 1871, in Traquair, Peebles, Scotland, Robert married Esther Smith Gibson. She was in born Traquair about 1844.

In 1881, Robert, Esther and their children were living in Barby, Northamptonshire, England. Robert was operating a farm of 303 acres, employing seven men and one boy.

The Gordons arrived in Canada about 1886. By 1887, Robert was the manager of the Vancouver San Juan Lime Company.

In 1887, Robert and Francis Lovett Carter-Cotton bought two Vancouver newspapers (the Daily News and the Daily Advertiser), and founded the Daily News-Advertiser.

It appears that Esther died about 1888.

On April 16, 1893, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, Robert married Julia Ann Dobson (née Gardiner). She was born in Huddersfield, England on September 19, 1857.

About 1894, while Robert was away from Vancouver, he found that Francis Carter-Cotton had taken control of the News-Advertiser. This began a public dispute in which Robert sued Carter-Cotton for $15,000. Robert also wrote letters to the Vancouver World newspaper, in which he was highly critical of Carter-Cotton.

During the dispute, Carter-Cotton refused to answer certain questions about the case. A judge ordered him to be imprisoned for three months for contempt of court. The case eventually reached a conclusion, and Carter-Cotton went on to serve in the provincial legislature for much of the time until 1916. He died in Vancouver on November 20, 1919.

In the late 1890s, the Vancouver directory often described Robert’s occupation as “gentleman” or “none.”

About 1898, the Gordons moved to 1219 Georgia Street (sometimes listed as 1259 Georgia Street in later years).

In 1901, Robert built a boarding and day school for girls at the corner of Jervis Street and Nelson Street. Robert’s daughters, Jessie and Mary, were the founders of the school.

From 1903 to 1909 the Vancouver directories described Robert as a land agent.

In 1908, Robert and Julia appeared in the Vancouver society directory.

By 1915, the Vancouver directory described Robert as a broker.

Julia died in Vancouver on June 21, 1918.

By 1925 Robert was retired.

Robert died in Vancouver on March 12, 1928.

Jessie Fisher Gordon

Jessie Fisher Gordon was born in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, Scotland on May 23, 1872.

She did not marry.

In 1898, she and her sister, Mary, founded a private school in their home at 1219 Georgia Street. The school later became Crofton House School for Girls.

Jessie retired in 1937.

She died in Vancouver on April 12, 1951.

Anne Mary Gordon

Anne Mary Gordon was born on January 23, 1874, in Dumfries, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

She did not marry.

In 1898, she and her sister, Jessie, founded the private school that became Crofton House School for Girls.

Mary retired in 1937.

She died in Vancouver on July 4, 1941.

Robert William Gordon was born on March 1 1875, in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

He moved to Denver, Colorado, where he was a general manager of a mining machinery factory.

He was still living in Denver in 1958.

Elizabeth Gordon was born on February 9, 1876, in Dumfries, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

On January 15, 1902, in Vancouver, she married David Llewellyn Jones, who was a physician.

John Wilson Gordon

It appears that John Wilson Gordon was born on June 7, 1877, in Dumfries, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. No further information is available for him.

 

Edith Margaret Gordon

Edith Margaret Gordon was born on May 22 (or 28) 1879, in Dumfries, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

In August 1904, she became engaged to Lewis William Toms. He was born on December 25, 1857, in Combe Martin North Devon, England. His parents were Humphrey W. Toms and Frances E. Thomas.

Alexander Bruce Gordon (son of Robert William Gordon)

Alexander Bruce Gordon was born in 1881 in Rugby, Warwickshire.

He became a physician.

On September 27, 1913, in Vancouver, he married Effield Branthwayt De Crepyny Toker. She was born in Simlila, Bengal, India on April 8, 1888. Her parents were Alliston Toker and Laura Frances Hart.

Alexander died in 1938 in Barnet, Middlesex, England.

Effield died in 1959 in Pancras, London, England.

 

Agnes Emily Gordon

Agnes Emily Gordon was born on October 4, 1883.

She did not marry.

She died in Vancouver on January 28, 1958.

 

Dorothy Ponsonby Gordon

Dorothy Ponsonby Gordon was born in Vancouver on September 23, 1894.

On October 6, 1920, in Vancouver, she was married to George Bruce Duncan, who was a lawyer. He was born in London, England, about 1883. His parents were John Duncan and Helen Watson Tosh.

George and Dorothy later lived in California.

Dorothy died in California on March 10, 1958.
