Eadie, John (1881-1919)

John Eadie was the manager of the Vancouver office of Dingwall Cotts and Company, a shipping and import-export business based in London, England. He lived at 2022 Haro Street from 1917 to 1919.

John was born on January 19, 1881, in Govan, near Glasgow, Scotland. His father was William Eadie (1846-1926), a Scottish painter who lived much of his later life in England, particularly in London and in St. Ives, Cornwall. John’s mother was Annie Bruce Harvey (about 1852-probably 1906).

John came to Canada in 1913. He travelled on the Empress of Britain and arrived in Quebec City, Quebec, in August 1913.

By 1914, he was the manager of Dingwall Cotts and Company’s office in Vancouver. He was living at 1168 Haro Street.

On August 17, 1914, in Vancouver, John married Annie Laurie Duncan. She was born about 1880 in Renfrew, Scotland. Her father was James Duncan, who was a medical doctor. Her mother was Jane Miller Laurie.

From 1917 to 19198, John and Annie were living at 2022 Haro Street.

In the spring of 1919, Annie went to Scotland, along with John’s and Annie’s two children. John was planning to join the family in Scotland. However, John died of appendicitis in Vancouver on May 5, 1919. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

It appears that Annie did not re-marry, and that she lived in England until she died in Worthing, Sussex, England, in 1964.

John and Annie had two children.

It appears that one child was John Eadie, was killed in the Second World War.

Initially he had a studio made out of an old out-house, and he and his wife Annie EADIE lived at Halsetown. He exhibited three paintings at the Dowdeswell show of 1890 with the Cornish-associated painters, and a further three at Nottingham Castle in 1894.

The death of this well-known shipping man comes as a great shock to his friends and business associates, but it comes as more of a tragedy, as he was about to leave for Scotland, where Mrs. Eadie and two children went a month ago.

As chairman of the shipping bureau he had many matters of vital importance to deal with and his fairness and broadmindedness always earned for him the highest praise. Expressions of the deepest regret were voiced by members of the board of trade yesterday when they learned of Mr. Eadie’s demise.

To Mr. Eadie went the credit of placing the first order for the building of a steel freighter in the shipyards of this province, the Steamer War Dog, built at Wallace’s, on the North Shore.

The funeral will be held at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon from Center & Hana’s to the Mountain View cemetery.”
