Lionel George William Tallamy was a clerk with the Canadian Consolidated Rubber Company. He lived at 1987 Beach Avenue from 1916 to 1918.

 

Early Life in England

Lionel George William Tallamy was born on April 8, 1887 in Islington, London, England. (He was often called “George,” but some sources refer to him as “Lionel Tallamy,” “L. Tallamy,” or “L.G. Tallamy.”)

George’s parents were William Tallamy (1853-1937) and Matilda Jacobs (1860-1938). They were married in Bideford, Devonshire, England, in 1885. William Tallamy was a printer compositor.

In 1891 and 1901, George was living with his parents in London. In 1910 he was at 108 St. Thomas Road in London. William Tallamy was living at the same address.

By 1914, George had become a salesman for Canadian Consolidated Rubber.

 

Marriage to Dorothy Slatter

On August 8, 1914, in Vancouver, George married Dorothy Florence Slatter. She was born on November 8, 1894, in London, England. Her parents were Henry (“Harry”) Arthur Slatter and Alice Good (née Winter) (1864-1914).

Harry Slatter had been a military musician in England., and he became the bandmaster of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from 1911 to 1914 and from 1919 to 1925. He later taught music in Vancouver and in other parts of British Columbia, including Metlakatla, Kitimat, Squamish and Kelowna.

Alice Slatter died in Vancouver on December 25, 1914. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Harry Slatter died in Vancouver on July 15, 1942. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

In 1914 the Musicians Mutual Protective Union appointed George to be an auditor.

In 1916, George and Dorothy were guests at the Bowen Island Hotel.

By 1919, George and Dorothy had moved to Victoria, British Columbia. George was a salesman for Dominion Rubber System Limited.

George belonged to St. Andrew’s masonic lodge in Victoria.

George and Dorothy continued to live in Victoria until the 1960s.

In 1935, they traveled to England to attend the golden wedding celebrations for George’s parents.

Dorothy died in Saanich, British Columbia, on August 28, 1965. She was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.

In the 1965 Canada voters list, George was retired. Dorothy did not appear on the list.

George later travelled to England. He died in Bideford, Devon in 1969.

They began their musical and military training there. After serving in the 1st Royal Fusiliers, Henry enlisted in the Grenadier Guards at age 20, still a musician. He married Alice Good in 1884 and they had 4 children: Arthur Albert Slatter, John Henry Slatter, Dorothy Florence Slatter, and William Matthew Slatter. Moving to Canada, Henry Arthur Slatter was bandmaster of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from 1911-14 and 1919-1925.”
