Captain Thomas Oloff de Wet was a member of the British Royal Navy. He lived at 1951 Robson Street in 1919.

Thomas Oloff de Wet was born in Dublin, Ireland, on February 26, 1869. His father was Olof Golieb de Wet (1818-1894). His mother was Annie Thompson (about 1841-1919).

He studied at the Thames Nautical Training College, where he received a medal as “the boy likely to make the finest sailor.”

In 1896, in Croydon, Surrey, Thomas married Elizabeth Bradstreet. She was born about 1872 in Mitcham, Surrey.

As his college had predicted, Thomas did have a successful career in the navy. He became a captain and he served in the First World War. He was mentioned in despatches and he received the C.B.E. in 1919.

Thomas and Elizabeth, along with their children, Lily, Eugenie and Hugh, came to Canada in 1919, although it appears that their stay was relatively brief.

Thomas was also the principal naval officer in a series of operations, including the evacuation of Constantinople in 1923; North China in 1927; Egypt in 1924 to 1926, 1928 and 1933.

In 1938, Thomas and Elizabeth were living at Le Castel, Nivolas, Isère, in France.

Thomas died on March 30, 1940, at Marlborough House in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
