Alonzo Steele Brake was a merchant and importing broker. He lived at 1808 Nelson Street in 1909 and 1910.

He was born in Ritchie Country, West Virginia, on November 17, 1860. His father was James R. Brake; his mother was Elizabeth Ann Bush.

Alonzo lived in a series of places in the United States before coming to Canada. In each case, he set himself up as a merchant or broker, and he continued that pattern after he arrived in Vancouver.

On October 16, 1881, in Ritchie County, West Virginia, he married Ida Arleen (or Arlene) Snodgrass. She was born on November 9, 1859, in Ritchie County. Her father was Benjamin F. Snodgrass; her mother was Anna V. Prather. The family lived for a time in Colorado.

It appears that Alonzo and Ida were divorced before 1893. Ida later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she operated a hotel. She died in Salt Lake City on January 18, 1945. She was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.

On December 26, 1893, in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, Alonzo married Lillian J. Crocker. She was born in February 1871, possibly in Indiana. In 1900, Alonzo and Lillian were living in Moscow, Idaho. Lillian appears to have died between 1900 and 1906. It appears that Alonzo and Lilllian did not have any children.

By 1906, Alonzo was in Vancouver. On November 7, 1906, in Vancouver, he married Anna Mildred Boyce. She was born about 1882 in Mendocino County, California. Her father was James W. Boyce; her mother was Mildred A. Queensberry.

In 1909 and 1910, Alonzo and his family were living at 1808 Nelson Street. In 1909 and 1910, Alonzo had an importing and brokerage business at 510 Homer Street.

By 1911, Alonzo had moved his business to 157 Alexander Street. He and his family were living at 2356 West Seventh Avenue, where they stayed for the rest of their time in Vancouver.

In 1913, Alonzo continued his importing business at 822 Homer Street, using the name of Brake Creedon Company. Cornelius Joseph Creedon was born in Keenansville, Ontario, about 1883.

It appears that Mr. Creedon was living in Calgary, Alberta, in 1906. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911, living in the Elcho Apartments at 833 Davie Street. [See: Changing Vancouver: http://changingvancouver.wordpress.com/tag/elcho-apartments/.] He was a manager with E.P. Charlton Company Ltd., which operated “5, 10 and 15 cent stores” at 339 West Hastings Street. Earl Perry Charlton had a chain of these stores in the eastern United States. He sold out to F.W. Woolworth in 1899, and moved to California, where he started a new chain of stores; he also published postcards, including several that portrayed Vancouver scenes. In 1912, he sold his second chain of stores to the Woolworth Company, and became a vice president of Woolworths: E. P. Charlton & Co.; 1899-1912; San Francisco, CA; http://www.metropostcard.com/publishersc1.html. Earl Perry Charlton died on November 20, 1930, in Westport Harbour, Massachusetts.

In Vancouver, F.W. Woolworth took out a full-page advertisement in the Vancouver Daily World [June 22, 1912, page 20], announcing a “great sale” in their 628 stores. The ad described Woolworths as the successor to E.P. Charlton and Co. at 339 West Hastings Street. By 1913, Cornelius Creedon had gone into business with Alonzo Brake.

In April 1918, Alonzo was out on a boat on the north arm of Burrard Inlet. Shortly afterward, he developed an infection, which led to pneumonia. He died in Vancouver on April 22, 1918. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Cornelius Creed stayed in Vancouver until about 1919. In 1919, he was the manager of the North Western Messenger Service, and was living in the Manitoba Hotel at 50 West Cordova Street. After 1919, there is no further sign of him in Vancouver.

Alonzo’s wife, Anna, was living in Los Angeles, California, in 1930, and in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1940.
