Maud Newstead lived at 2056 Beach Avenue in 1912 and 1913.

 

Family Background

Maud’s background is somewhat complicated. It appears that she was born Maud Allen in Oxnead, Norfolk, England in 1869.

Maud’s parents were John Leist Allen (1835–1878) and Mary Ann Halesworth (1839–after 1910). Their marriage registration did not include the name of Mary Ann’s father.

The local newspaper announcement said that Mary Ann was the adopted daughter of William High.

Mary Ann Halesworth was baptized on May 28, 1841. Her mother was Sophia Halesworth. (Sophia Halesworth seems not to have married, although she lived in William High’s household for many years.)

Sophia Halesworth appears to have died in 1851. William High died in 1852.

Maud’s Marriage to Benjamin Newstead

On September 21, 1897, in North Tuddenham, Norfolk, Maud Allen married Benjamin Newstead. He was a farmer, although he had worked as a draper in the early 1890s.

It appears that Eliza Newstead died in 1911.

 

Benjamin’s and Maud’s Married Life

During the course of their marriage, Benjamin and Maud lived at Mattishall, Wood Norton, and Haveringland (sometimes called Haverland), all in Norfolk.

In 1908, Benjamin filed a petition for divorce from Maud. Walter May was the co-respondent. The outcome of the divorce petition is not available.

Maud and her son, Geoffrey, travelled to Canada in 1910.

Maud lived in Vancouver from about 1911 to 1913. In 1913, she and Geoffrey travelled from Vancouver to San Diego, California. The immigration documents described Maud’s occupation as “artist.”

In 1922 and 1924, Maud was living in Santa Cruz, California. The 1922 city directory described her as Benjamin’s widow.

A 1925 article in the Santa Cruz Evening News said that Maud was leaving for New Zealand.

In 1929, Maud was a defendant in a lawsuit by her daughter-in-law, relating to a piece of property at Twin Lakes, near Santa Cruz. The court dismissed the action.

Benjamin Newstead’s Later Life

In 1911, Benjamin was living at Hunworth, Norfolk.

In 1912, he sailed from England to Portland, Maine, on his way to Vancouver.

In 1913, he was operating a stationery business in Vancouver.

About 1916, Benjamin went to live in the United States. In 1920, he was in Oakland, California, where he was the proprietor of a grocery store. The 1920 United States census described him as “widowed.”

He later returned to Vancouver, where he again operated a grocery store. For a time he was also involved in a millinery business with his sisters, Gertrude and Emma (who was also called “Jennie”).

Benjamin died in Vancouver on February 27, 1936.

Geoffrey Stratton Newstead

Geoffrey Stratton Newstead was born on October 30, 1898 in Mattishall, Norfolk, England.

Near the end of the First World War, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served briefly in Canada before he was discharged as medically unfit.

In 1919, he went to live in Santa Cruz, California, where he was in the real estate business.

In 1921, he married Georgia Helen Niles.

In 1926, Georgia sued Geoffrey for divorce.

In October 1927, the court refused to grant an interlocutory decree of divorce. However, the court ordered Geoffrey to pay alimony and court costs. Georgia obtained custody of their son.

Geoffrey’s Marriage to Gladys Marie Lea

On August 16, 1933, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Geoffrey married Gladys Marie Lea, who was a stenographer. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia about 1911. Her parents were Thomas Swan Lea (1871-1938) and Anna Magdalene Beyeler (1883-1971).

Geoffrey and Georgina had a son, who was also called Geoffrey Newstead. He was born in Santa Cruz, California on May 2, 1922.

During the Second World War, he served with the Canadian Army.

In 1943, he married Barbara Warren.

Emma Jane Newstead

Benjamin Newstead had two sisters who lived in Vancouver.

One sister was Gertrude Newstead. Not much information is available for her. For a time, she operated a millinery shop with her sister, Emma Jane Newstead. It appears that Gertrude may have moved to England in the 1940s.

The other sister was Emma Jane Newstead, who was born in Walsingham, Norfolk, England in 1860. She was often called Jennie or Jeannie.

Emma worked as a milliner in England until about 1910.

Sometimes she lived with relatives; other times she was on her own.

She did not marry.

Emma arrived in Vancouver about 1910.

She was in the Vancouver directories from 1912 to 1940:

She had her own millinery shop for many years, sometimes with her sister, Gertrude.

 

The Millinery Shops on Dunsmuir Street

A series of millinery shops operated in a building on the north side of Dunsmuir Street, just west of Seymour Street. The owner was William Foster Huntting (1879-1930) and the architects were Maclure and Fox.

The first shop was called “Modes de Paris,” and the proprietor was Madame Louise Benoit.

Jeanne Louise Benoit was born at Crest, Drome, France on June 30, 1888. She was married to Louis Eugene Benoit, who was an automobile machinist. They immigrated to Canada in 1910.

It appears that Madame Benoit ended her association with the shop in mid-1912.

Louis and Louise were divorced on February 19, 1919. Louis married Victorine Josephina Marjuerite Ruynat on August 9, 1919, in Vancouver.

Louis and Louise had a daughter, Pierrette J. Benoit, who was born in Crest on July 27, 1908. In 1920, Louise and Pierrette travelled to the United States. In 1927, Louise applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1928, Louise and Pierrette were living in Venice, California.

In 1913 and 1914, the shop on Vancouver’s Dunsmuir Street was called “Chic Parisien.” The proprietor was Angelina W. Bourget, who lived with Alfred W. Bourget at 1056 Pender Street.
