Ismay Fell was a Vancouver City policeman. He lived at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street in 1918. His wife, Fanny, was at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street from 1919 to 1920, and the Fell family continued to live at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street until the late 1920s.

Ismay Fell was born on June 27, 1879, in Roxburgshire, Scotland (perhaps in Hawick, which is pronounced “hoyk”: see the Ismay Fell’s First World War attestation paper, which gives his birthplace as “Hoyick,” in Roxburghshire). Ismay’s father was Thomas Fell; his mother was Jane Ismay. (Although, according to his death certificate, his mother was Fanny Roberts Scott.)

Ismay’s military experience included seven and a half years with the 28th Hussars.

He arrived in Vancouver about 1909, and he lived in a series of apartments and houses on the east side of Vancouver.

On October 2, 1912, Ismay married Frances (Fanny) Robertson in Vancouver. Fanny was born in Scotland on January 15, 1892; her father was Hugh Robertson; her mother was Fanny George.

During the First World War, Ismay enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, he returned to Vancouver and continued his work with the city police force.

At some point, he developed tuberculosis, and he went to the sanitarium at Tranquille, British Columbia, where he died on March 11, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. After Ismay died, Fanny became a matron at the Vancouver police station.

On August 18, 1927, in Vancouver, Fanny married Archibald Irwin. Archibald was born in Kinnego, Ireland, on December 2, 1886; his father was William Irwin; his mother was Susan Watt. The marriage certificate said that Archibald was a farmer, although he seems to have been retired. (Archibald’s death certificate said that he was a retired police officer, but there is no other information that supports this conclusion.)

Fanny died in Vancouver on March 7, 1945. She was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Archibald Irwin died in Vancouver on April 18, 1967.

Ismay Fell and Frances Robertson had two boys, both born on the same day:

Hugh Robertson Fell

Hugh was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1913. He became a clerk with the Vancouver City Police. He developed pulmonary tuberculosis, and he was transferred to the Tranquille Sanitarium, where he died on February 25, 1941. He was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Thomas Ismay Fell

Thomas was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1913. He became a controller for Canadian Canners Ltd. He was married to Wanda Cullen. He died in Vancouver on November 11, 1960.
