Ismay Fell was a Vancouver City policeman. He lived at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street in 1918.

His wife, Fanny, was at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street from 1919 to 1920, and the Fell family continued to live at 1836 1/2 Alberni Street until about 1927.

Early Life

Ismay Fell was born on June 27, 1879, in Roxburgshire, Scotland (perhaps in Hawick, which is pronounced “hoyk”: see Ismay Fell’s First World War attestation paper, which gives his birthplace as “Hoyick,” in Roxburghshire). (Some sources give his full name as “James Ismay Fell,” although he normally went by “Ismay Fell.”)

Ismay’s parents were Thomas Fell and Jane Ismay. (However, his death certificate says that his mother was Fanny Roberts Scott.)

Ismay’s military experience included seven and a half years with the 28th Hussars. He served in the South African War.

To Vancouver

Ismay arrived in Vancouver about 1909, and he lived in a series of apartments and houses on the east side of Vancouver.

Marriage to Fanny Robertson

On October 2, 1912, Ismay married Frances (Fanny or Fannie) Robertson in Vancouver. Fanny was born in Scotland on January 15, 1892, Her parents were Hugh Robertson (1860-1896) and Fanny George (born 1861).

First World War and Later Life

During the First World War, Ismay enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

On October 10, 1919, he was discharged from the military forces because he was medically unfit.

He returned to Vancouver, where he continued his work with the city police force.

At some point, he developed tuberculosis, and he went to the sanitarium at Tranquille, British Columbia, where he died on March 11, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Fanny’s Marriage to Archibald Irwin

On August 18, 1927, in Vancouver, Fanny married Archibald Irwin. Archibald was born in Kinnego, Ireland, on December 2, 1886. His parents were William Irwin and Susan Watt.

The marriage certificate said that Archibald was a farmer, although he seems to have been retired. (Archibald’s death certificate said that he was a retired police officer, but there is no other information that supports this conclusion.)

Fanny died in Vancouver on March 7, 1945. She was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.
