Thomas Horne was an insurance agent and steamship representative. He lived at 1102 Denman Street in 1904 and at 2037 Pendrell Street from 1905 to 1912.

 

Family Background

Thomas Horne was born in Kincardine on Forth, Scotland, about 1876. His father was Walter Towers Horne (1842-1912), who was a merchant in Fiji for many years.

Marriage in Australia and Life in Vancouver

On January 24, 1900, in Sydney, Australia, Thomas married Edith Marion Audley Coote. She was born in Hobart, Tasmania, on February 9, 1874. Her father was Moses Audley Coote (1839-1915), who was a business promoter and a politician in Tasmania.

Thomas first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1903. He was living at 827 Georgia Street, and working with Frank Burnett, Senior, in Burnett, Horne and Company. Frank Burnett, Junior, was also with the firm. Further information appears in the page for Frank Burnett. (Like Thomas, Frank Burnett, Senior was familiar with many aspects of Pacific island cultures.)

For his first few years in Vancouver, Thomas was an insurance agent. He was with Burnett, Horne from 1903 to 1905. In 1906 he was with Malcolm, Macrae and Company.

From 1907 to 1912 he was a local manager with Dodwell and Company, a firm of steamship agents.

Thomas spent much time away from Vancouver. Most references to the Horne family mention a sailing trip to Australia or to Fiji. Sometimes, Mrs. Horne would participate in social activities without Thomas.

In 1912, Thomas wrote a letter to the Sun newspaper in Sydney, New South Wales, encouraging Sydney to improve its port facilities.

In 1913, Edith and her son sailed to join Thomas in Suva, Fiji Islands. She was not expected to return to Vancouver in the near future.

Edith later returned to Canada. She died in Vancouver on April 8, 1946; she was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Thomas died in Sydney, Australia, on January 16, 1949.

Thomas Audley Horne

Thomas Audley Horne was born in Vancouver on June 17, 1904.

He trained as a merchant seaman. He later worked in the coal business.

He married Nesta Bower, who was an artist. She was born in Barbados on September 2, 1909. Her parents were Ernest Francis Sinderby Bowen (1865–1926) and Maud M. Hodgkinson (1863–1955).

Thomas died in Vancouver on November 29, 1955. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Nesta died in Victoria, British Columbia, on March 2, 1987.
