McLellan, Harold Nelson (1882-1957)

Harold Nelson McLellan was a surveyor’s assistant and a clerk for the Imperial Oil refinery at Ioco, British Columbia. He lived at 1857 Alberni Street in 1920.

 

Early Life

Harold Nelson McLellan was born on November 26, 1882 (or 1883), in Ottawa, Ontario. His parents were David McLellan (1849-1933) and Margaret Ogilvie (1849-1932). David McLellan was a driver and stationary engineer.  The McLellan family lived for many years at 120 Augusta Street in Ottawa.

Until at least 1911, Harold was living with his parents in Ottawa. In 1909, he was working as a driver.

By 1918, Harold was working as a surveyor’s assistant.

 

To Vancouver

On June 27, 1918, in Vancouver,  Harold married Rhea Graham, who was born on September 25, 1885, in Hamilton, Ontario. Her parents were Harry Graham (1854-1933) and Sarah Ogilvie (1858-1936). Harry Graham was a hotel clerk.

Harold’s Working Career

In 1921, Harold was in Bull Harbour, on Hope Island, British Columbia. He was part of a crew that was establishing wireless radio stations along the Pacific coast.

By 1925, Harold was working for the Imperial Oil Company. He and Rhea were living in Ioco, which was Imperial Oil’s townsite for its refinery. (The name “Ioco” comes from “Imperial Oil Co.”).

Harold and Rhea lived in Ioco until the 1950s.

Harold was a member of the Freemasons.

Harold died in Ioco on September 22, 1957. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Rhea died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on May 16, 1959. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

Imperial Oil shut down the Ioco refinery in 1995. In 2002 the town-site became a heritage conservation area.

Harold and Rhea had the following children.

Harold and Rhea had a baby girl who was stillborn on August 24, 1921.

 

Harold David McLellan

Harold David McLellan was born in Vancouver on July 5, 1924.

In 1947 he obtained a degree in chemical engineering from the University of British Columbia.

He worked for Bloedel, Stewart and Welch in Port Alberni. Later he was an employee of the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan), first in Arvida and Montreal, Quebec, and then for 32 years in Kitimat, British Columbia.

In 1958, Harold married Phyllis.

In 1971, Harold and another Alcan employee obtained a patent relating to the operation of the aluminum smelter. They assigned the patent to Alcan.

Phyllis died on March 7, 1998.

Harold died in Saanich, British Columbia, on August 13, 1912.

Gordon McLellan was born in 1925 in British Columbia, probably in Vancouver. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia in 1948.

He worked for Esso Chemical of Canada in Sarnia, Ontario.

He was married to Doris.

Gordon died in Sarnia in May 1982.

Harry was predeceased by his dear wife, Phyllis on March 7, 1998. They had met in Kitimat and were married in 1958 sharing 40 years in a wonderful and loving marriage. He is predeceased also by his parents and younger brother, Gordon. Harry is survived by his sister-in- law, Doris McLellan, nephew Douglas McLellan and niece Lea Anne Johnson, five great-nephews, two great-great-nieces and one great-great- nephew. A Memorial Service will be held at St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church at 4733 West Saanich Road on Thursday, August 23 at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rector with a reception to follow in the church hall. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon or the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. His ashes will lie alongside those of Phyllis in St Michael and All Angels’ cemetery. Harry, following in his father’s footsteps was proud to be a Freemason.
