Allan Bryson was a carpenter and builder who lived at 1214 Denman Street from 1904 to 1907.

 

Family Background

Allan Bryson was born in Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, on August 1, 1867. His parents were John Bryson (1827-1877 and Elizabeth Catherine Bates (1829-1908).

 

Marriage to Mabel Hatch

By 1892, Allan was living in Massachusetts. On June 2, 1892, in Medford Massachusetts, he married Mabel Emily Hutchinson Hatch. She was born on April 25, 1873, in Hollis, Maine. Her parents were George W. Hatch and Emily Hutchinson.

 

To Vancouver

Allan and Mabel came to Vancouver about 1898.

Allan started a contracting and building business in Vancouver. He built several houses and apartment buildings, many of which were in the 1700 block of Davie Street.

Some or all of this group of houses on the south side of the 1700 block of Davie Street may be the work of Allan Bryson.

According to the Vancouver directories, from 1908 until the late 1920s, Allan and Mabel lived at 1724 Davie Street.

Allan carried on as a building contractor until he retired in the mid-1920s.

Mabel continued to live at 1724 Davie Street until the 1940s. She died in Vancouver on May 23, 1947. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Roswell Allan Bryson

Roswell Allan Bryson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 11, 1895. (He was often called “Ross.”)

He became a school teacher.

He was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Later he was a lumber salesman and a sales director for the insurance company of Parsons Brown.

On September 9, 1920, in Vancouver, he married Grace Helene McGregor. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on June 21, 1895. Her parents were Adolphus Grant McGregor (1867-1920) and Anna Grace Baldwin (1866-1946).

Willard Hatch Bryson was born in Vancouver on April 4, 1905.

On June 3, 1933, in Armstrong, British Columbia, Willard married Blanche de Winton Collis, who was a nurse. She was born on March 4, 1902, in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. Her parents were William Robert Fitzgerald Collis (1857-1948) and Constance Octavia De Winton (1867-1939).

Mrs. Wood was a substitute teacher in Chesterfield for a number of years and was a member of the Girl Scouts, Red Hat Society and Chester Senior Women’s Club. She enjoyed painting at the Shepard Center and loved performing in the theater with the John Rolfe Players. She is survived by her loving husband, David Wood; daughters, Grace Elizabeth McGlynn and husband, Patrick, Colleen Beverly Córdova and husband, David, Cynthia Anne Wood and husband, Gregory Driscoll, and Allison Ruth Theriault and husband, Kevin; grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Nagy, Alexander Bryson Nagy, Cristina Celeste Córdova, Esteban Tristan Córdova, Sean David McGlynn and Brian Patrick McGlynn; numerous friends and loved ones. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Chester United Methodist Church, 12132 Percival St, Chester, Virginia 23831, with Pastor Silvia Meadows officiating.
