Mackie, John (possibly about 1859-1906)

John Mackie was an expressman. He lived at 994 Denman Street in 1905.

Not much information is available for John Mackie or for his family. It appears that he was born in Scotland between 1859 and 1863, possibly in Murrayshire.

He may have married Sarah Buchanan in Vancouver on September 18, 1904. If so, then his parents were George and Barbara Mackie. Sarah Buchanan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, about 1867. Her parents were John and Annie Buchanan.

The wedding was at the residence of Mrs. Maxwell, 338 East Hastings Street. Mary Maxwell (1861-1928) was the widow of George Ritchie Maxwell, a Scottish minister and member of the Canadian House of Commons from 1896 to 1902.

It is not clear what happened to John and Sarah Mackie. A man called John Mackie died in Vancouver on June 28, 1906. According to his death certificate, he was a logger, and he was born in Scotland about 1863. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver [Plot: OLD/4/03/020/0012]. It appears that the local newspapers did not publish any items relating to John Mackie’s death.

A woman named Sarah Mackie died in Vancouver on January 10, 1907. She was born in Scotland about 1867. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. [Plot: HORNE1/2/04/007/0010]. Her burial plot is not in the same area as that of John Mackie.

The Vancouver World published a short notice on January 10, 1907: “Mackie. The death occurred this morning in this city of Mrs. Sarah Mackie, aged [40] years, a native of Scotland. Funeral Friday afternoon at 2:00 from Kemp & Simpson’s rooms. Rev. Mr. Prescott will officiate.”

No further information is available for John Mackie or Sarah Buchanan.
