Abraham (Abe) Karma was a shipyard carpenter, fisherman and community activist. He lived at 1830 Alberni Street in 1910.

He was born in Finland (in Vyborg [Viipuri] or Olesburg), on January 30, 1874. His father was John Karme.

He married Anna Katie Vaananen (Wäänänen) in Finland. She was born in Knopio, Finland on Febraury 19, 1866. Her father was Lauri Wäänänen.

About 1903, Abe and Anna arrived in Vancouver.

Abe first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1905. He was living at 104 Beatty Lane, and he was working as a carpenter. In 1905, he was active in raising funds to support Finland in its struggles with Russia.

He later lived at the following addresses

He was a member of the Dominion Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of Canada.

In 1915 and 1916, he was the manager of Finnish Hall at 2215 and 2605 East Pender Street.

On July 27, 1917, in Vancouver, Anna died. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On August 24, 1929, in Vancouver, Abe married Tyyne Wirtanen. She was born on January 20, 1899, in Tampere [Tammerfors], Finland. Her parents were August and Matilda Virtanen.

Abe died in Vancouver on February 7, 1962. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Tyyne died in New Westminster, British Columbia on April 6, 1980.

 

Abe and Anna had a son.

 

Vaine Abe (Jack) Karme

Vaine Abe (Jack) Karme was born on February 24, 1901 in Vibors, Finland.

He worked as a machinist at Vancouver Shipyards.

On November 16, 1925, in Vancouver, he married Ruby Madeline McMahon. She was born on March 30, 1902, in London England Her father was William McMahon. Her mother was Elisa Harriet Green.

Ruby died in Vancouver on June 12, 1972.

Jack died in Tarzana, Los Angeles County, California, on November 15, 1994.

Jack and Ruby had a son, Alan B. Karme, who obtained a medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1959. He lived for a time in Montreal, Quebec, and later practised as a psychiatrist in Pasadena, California.
