Borland, James (1864-1937)

James Borland was a building contractor and real estate broker. He lived at 1934 Nelson Street from about 1900 to 1923.

He was born in Huron County, Ontario, on August 9, 1864. His father was James Borland; his mother was Mary Watt.

He had arrived in Vancouver by 1892, and possibly as early as 1888. The 1892 Vancouver directory listed him as James “Bowland.”

On September 6, 1893, in Vancouver, he married Sarah Hamill. She was born on October 22, 1867, in Grey County, Ontario. Her father was Robert Hamill (1831-1913); her mother was Isabella Holland (1833-1912).

For about three years, the Borland family lived in a house on Harris Street (now 656 East Georgia Street), which still exists. By 1896, they were living at 210 Princess Street, where they stayed until about 1901. By January 1901, they were living at 1934 Nelson Street, where they stayed until 1923. In 1924, they moved to 1361 Minto Crescent in Shaughnessy Heights.

James continued in the real estate business through the 1930s.

Sarah died in Vancouver on January 1, 1932. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

James died in Vancouver on July 8, 1937. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

James and Sarah had the following children

 

Alfred Henry Borland

Alfred Henry Borland was born in Vancouver on October 26, 1894. For a time, he was a law student, although he later had a series of occupations that did not involve the law.

On June 4, 1919, in New Westminster, British Columbia, he married Bertha May Kirby. She was born in Brandon, Manitoba, on November 9, 1893. Her father was William Kirby. According to her birth registration, her mother was Elizabeth Ann Tilley; however, the marriage certificate said that her mother was Elizabeth Austin. This marriage ended in divorce.

On October 22, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, Alfred married Mabel F. Russell. She was born in Minnesota about 1899. Her father was John C. Scullin; her mother was Alice M. Wiley. Alfred and Mabel lived in Fresno, California throughout the 1930s. Alfred was a public relations director for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. In 1942, he registered for United States military service. Alfred’s and Mabel’s marriage ended in divorce.

On January 12, 1952, in Los Angeles, Alfred married Emily Owen Bon. She was born in California in 1899. Her father was Frederick Chester Schell; her mother was Clara Owen. Emily had been married before, first to Adelbert L. Stebbins, and then to Benjamin Bon.

Alfred was living in Capitola, Santa Cruz, California, when he died on July 6, 1973.

 

Stanley James Borland

Stanley James Borland was born in Vancouver on December 24, 1899. He became an ice cream manufacturer.

On September 12, 1931, in Vancouver, he married Emma Susan Jeans. She was born in Digby County, Nova Scotia about 1907. Her father was Sidney Jeans; her mother was Frances Mary Barter.

Stanley died in Vancouver on January 7, 1978.

 

Gladys Irene Borland

Gladys Irene Borland was born in Vancouver on August 7, 1904. She lived at home with her parents until 1937. Sometime after that, she married Ronald James Stuart.

Gladys died in Kelowna on July 27, 1977.
