Browning, Herman (1884-1968)

Herman Browning was a chauffeur. He lived at 1174 Denman Street in 1915 and possibly in 1916.

 

Tentative Identification: Early Life

Although there were other people named Herman Browning in Vancouver, it appears that the person at 1174 Denman Street was born on December 26, 1884, in Plymouth, Devon, England. His parents were Henry Webb Browning and Mary Ann White. Herman’s family had a total of 10 children, including William and Florence, who settled in British Columbia along with Herman.

Herman was married to Leslie Llewylla Howorth in 1913 in Plymouth. She was born on August 25, 1895, in Felixstow, England. Her parents were Lloyd Woodville Price and Elizabeth Gardener. (Her father later became known as Lloyd Howorth).

Herman was a trooper in the Royal First Devon Imperial Yeomanry from 1904 to 1907. He served in the Corps of Guides in British Columbia from 1912 to 1914. During the First World War, he was a private in an Army Service Corps mechanical transport company from 1915 to 1917; he received a War Service Badge. During the Second World War, Herman was an aeronautical inspector for the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Herman also had several business ventures.

In the early 1920s, Herman and Leslie were living at 43A River Street in Toronto. Herman was an employee of “The Perfect Wind Deflector.”

During the 1920s and 1930s, Herman and Leslie worked as furriers in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver.

For a time during the 1930s, Herman had a hot dog stand in Confederation Park in Burnaby, British Columbia. He was also an inventor and manufacturer.

Herman’s and Leslie’s marriage ended in divorce on January 22, 1936. Herman later moved to the Seymour Creek and Horseshoe Bay areas, north of Vancouver. While he was in Horseshoe Bay, he worked at Marine Realty, specializing in water front property from Vancouver to Squamish, British Columbia.

Leslie lived in an apartment at Granville Street and 14th Avenue in Vancouver. She later married John Miller. Leslie died in White Rock, British Columbia, on January 2, 1989.

Herman died in Vancouver on June 28, 1968.

Herman and Leslie had two children.

 

Jacqueline Mary Browning

Jacqueline Mary Browning was born in Toronto, Ontario, on January 10, 1923.

On December 24, 1941, in Vancouver, Jacqueline married Harold Chappell, who was an electrical contractor. Harold was born in Sheffield, England on August 9, 1906. His parents were Arthur Chappell and Emma Andrew.

Harold and Jacqueline lived in Vancouver until 1947, when they moved to White Rock, British Columbia.

Harold died in White Rock on May 11, 1977.

Jacqueline died on October 19, 2001.

Harold and Jacqueline had four children.

 

Robert Lloyd Browning

Robert Lloyd Browning was born in 1924.

He died in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on August 27, 1931, after suffering from a ruptured appendix. He was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.
