Carnahan, Kenelm Evrard (or Everard) Nugent (1879-1936)

Kenelm Evrard (or Everard) Nugent Carnahan was an accountant who lived at 1860 Nelson Street from 1911 to 1928. (“Kenelm” was not a common name. Many people misspelled it or shortened it to “Ken” or changed it to “Kenneth” or “Kendall.”)

Kenelm was born on April 30, 1879, in Owen Sound, Ontario. His father was John Carnahan. His mother was Susanna Elizabeth Arthur.

By 1901, he was living in a boarding house in with Miss Elizabeth Wheeler at 115 O’Connor Street in Ottawa, Ontario. He was working as a bank clerk for the Ottawa branch of Molsons Bank.

Kenelm first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was living at Frances Helen De Wolf’s boarding house at 683 Bute Street in 1908 and 1909. Frances (1854-1941) was the widow of George De Wolf.

Kenelm was a teller with the Vancouver branch of Molsons Bank.

In 1910, Kenelm moved Mrs. Helena Cartwright’s boarding house at 1849 Robson Street.

On October 10, 1910, Kenelm married Edna Lucille Johnston. She was born on April 14, 1882 (some sources say 1883 or 1885), in Pembina, North Dakota. Her father was Benjamin Burrows Johnston (1855-1908). Her mother was Emma Amanda Andrews (1857-1918). (More information on the Johnston family appears on the page for Benjamin Burrows Johnston.)

Kenelm worked for Molsons Bank until 1917. From 1918 to about 1925, he was with Kelly Douglas, a large wholesale grocery firm. About 1925, he began to work for Robertson and Hackett Sawmills Limited (sometimes called R. and H. Sawmills). John William Hackett (1847-1918) and David Robertson (1850-1933) were builders and contractors, who had built a large sawmill on the north side of False Creek.
