“Capt. Bridgman’s Sudden Death,” Vancouver Province, September 16, 1904, page 3: Sudden indeed was the last summons to Capt. E.C. Bridgman, the well known pilot, last evening. After successfully piloting the British ship Falklandbank in from the Strait and berthing her at Evans, Coleman & Evans’ wharf, he entered the cabin of Capt. Robbins, the ship’s master for a few moments’ casual conversation, before leaving the ship. Capt. Bridgman sat down, and after a word or two his head suddenly fell forward on the table and he expired about 7 o’clock. It was his last voyage. . . .The deceased was a native of Lincolnshire, Eng., and was about fifty-five years of age. He had been in command of sailing vessels for several years before taking up his residence on the Pacific coast. He came here from Tacoma in 1885, before the city was incorporated, and had resided here ever since. Captain Bridgman was commander of many local steamers, including the Mermaid and Mamie, and was appointed a pilot about two years ago. He was the owner of considerable local real estate. Capt. Bridgman leaves a widow and one married son, Mr. Harvey [sic] Bridgman, who is manager of a general store at Port Essington, and is now up north.”
