Francis Henry Burnett (called Frank Burnett, Senior) worked in salmon canning, insurance and real estate. He was also a traveller, explorer and writer. He lived at 1846 Haro Street from 1903 to 1907, and possibly in 1909.
Frank Burnett (Junior) lived at 1877 Comox Street from 1911 to 1913.
Early Life
Frank Burnett, Senior was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on February 15, 1852. His parents were Peter Burnett and Henrietta Bond. Peter Burnett was a whaler captain.
Frank went to Merchant Taylors’ School near Liverpool.
In 1866, his father apprenticed him to a sailing ship called the Arundel. He sailed to Egypt and South Africa.
To Canada
Frank came to Canada about 1870, where his maternal uncle, William Bennett Bond, was a church official in Montreal. [Most sources seem to imply that, when Frank went to Montreal, William Bennett Bond was the archbishop. However, he did not become the Bishop of Montreal until 1879, and he did not become the archbishop as “Metropolitan” of Montreal until 1901.]
After arriving in Canada, Frank became a purser on a river boat, then a manufacturer’s agent, and a stockbroker.
Marriage to Henrietta Cooke
On July 11, 1877, in Drummondville, Quebec, Frank married Henrietta Clarinda Cooke. She was born in Quebec on December 15 (or 18) 1852. Her parents were Valentine Cooke and Mary Ann Faulkner.
To Manitoba
In 1880, the family moved to Manitoba. By 1881, they were living at Turtle Mountain, South Western Extension, Manitoba, where Frank was a farmer.
By 1891, he was a financial agent in Selkirk, Manitoba.
To Vancouver
About 1895, Frank’s health failed, and the family moved to Vancouver.
They went on a long trip to the South Seas. (Frank made several trips to that area, where he collected many artifacts, and he wrote extensively about his voyages and discoveries.)
In 1896, the Burnett family was back in Vancouver, living at 1248 Barclay Street.
Frank worked as a pilot commissioner and as business agent.
In 1898, Frank was a financial agent with Charles Gardiner Johnson, and he was living at 1600 Robson Street.
Further Sailing Trips
In 1901, Frank again started sailing in the South Pacific.
After he returned to North America, he bought a boat in Seattle. He and several family members went on a two-year cruise of the South Seas.
House on Haro Street
In 1900, Frank hired Robert Mackay Fripp to design a house at 1846 Haro Street.
By 1901, his son, Frank Junior, was living in the Haro Street house.
About 1903, Frank Senior moved into the Haro Street house. He lived there until 1909, when Frederick James Procter bought the property.
Other Vancouver Residences
In the summer of 1909, Frank and Henrietta, along with their daughter, Nina (Mrs. A. S. Blakemore) went for a three week tour of the Okanagan valley. In September, Frank and Henrietta moved to Glencoe Lodge on Georgia Street.
By 1912, the family moved to 4698 West 4th Avenue (at the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and Blanca Street). Frank arranged the house so that he was able to display his large collection of artifacts.
Later Life
Henrietta died in Vancouver on January 25, 1917. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Marriage to Annie Cooke and Later Life
On July 24, 1923, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Frank married Annie Marie Cooke, who was the sister of Henrietta Cooke. Annie was born in Quebec on March 31 (or 30), 1858. On April 28, 1892, Annie married Walter Bevan Axford, who was born in Ontario on November 19, 1862. Walter died in Winnipeg on December 20, 1916.
In 1927, Frank donated a large portion of his collection to the University of British Columbia. In 1929, the university awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. (Many of his artifacts are still in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.)
On February 20, 1930, Frank was attending a banquet of the Canadian Authors’ Association at the second Hotel Vancouver. He was proposing a toast to Vancouver as a city of culture, when he collapsed and died. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Annie died in Vancouver on January 1, 1937. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Frank Burnett and Henrietta Cook had the following children.
Joseph Francis Burnett (called Frank Burnett, Junior )
Joseph Francis Burnett was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 28, 1878.
He worked as a merchant and insurance broker.
On September 5, 1901, in Vancouver, he married Annie Josephine Mulhall. She was born on July 17, 1880, in Moncton, New Brunswick. Her parents were James Joseph Mulhall and Annie Mary J. Sutton.
Frank, Junior died in Burnaby, British Columbia on September 27, 1939. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Annie died in Haney, British Columbia on January 23, 1975. She was buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
Frank and Annie had four sons and one daughter.
Nina Marianne Burnett
Nina Marianne Burnett was born in Montreal, Quebec on February 2, 1879.
In 1901, she became engaged to James Robert Gillespie Bullen, who was born in Australia about 1870. He had recently resigned from his position as a bank teller in Vancouver.
However, this wedding did not take place. In 1906, James Bullen married Isabel Beasley. James died in 1942, and Isabel died in 1958.
On May 4, 1905, in Vancouver, Nina married Arthur Shirley Blakemore, who was an insurance broker. He was born on December 5, 1877 in Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire, England.
Arthur served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
After the war, Arthur and Nina were apparently still residing together for some time. The 1921 Canada census listed them as living with Nina’s father, Frank Burnett, Senior.
However, on June 5, 1923, in Adelaide, Australia, Nina married John (“Jack”) William Potts. He was born on April 12, 1887, in High Longtown [or Bewcastle], Cumberland, England. His parents were John Potts and Sybella Forrester. (In 1914, Jack’s mother had been living in Grenfell, Saskatchewan.)
Jack and Nina lived in Pender Harbour, British Columbia, where Jack was the postmaster. Nina was active in community affairs, especially the auxiliary of St. Mary’s Hospital in Pender Harbour.
Nina died in Pender Harbour on March 3, 1957. She was buried in Seaview Cemetery in Gibson’s, British Columbia.
After Nina’s death, Jack married Ivy May Ware.
Jack died in Sechelt, British Columbia on August 8, 1968.
Arthur went to San Mateo, California, aboard the SS Ruth Alexander. On September 25, 1925, in San Francisco, California, Arthur married Florence May Cooper, who was a daughter of Emily Jane Cooper. In 1930, Arthur and Florence were living in California.
Arthur died in San Francisco on December 8, 1937.
Florence died in Marin County, California, on March 13, 1960.
Arthur Blakemore and Nina Marianne Burnett had a daughter, Josephine Nina Blakemore, (1910-2003), who married Philip Stedman Groves on September 15, 1938. Philip was born in Vancouver on August 1, 1909. He died in Washington County, Oregon on January 7, 1992. Josephine died in Washington County, Oregon on February 26, 2003.
