Joseph Simon Bernet was a financial agent, importer and a broker of stocks and real estate.

He lived at 1801 Nelson Street in 1913.

 

Family Background

Joseph Simon Bernet was born in September 1880  in Nurnburg, Germany. His parents were Simon Bernet and Lena Sturm.

It appears that the Bernet family arrived in the United States about 1895.

 

To Vancouver

Joseph came to Vancouver about 1910.

He established the firm of Bernet and Helm, which had its offices at 882 Granville Street. Bernet and Helm were financial agents, brokers and importers.

Marriage to Hattie Rosenbaum

On February 17, 1913, the Vancouver Sun reported Joseph’s engagement to Hattie Samuel Rosenbaum. Hattie was born in New York on October 14, 1875.

The wedding was in New York City on April 2, 1913.

Business in Vancouver

According to the Vancouver directory, by 1918, “James S. Bernet” and Joseph Gluck had a wholesale jewellers business at 173 West Cordova Street. J. S. Bernet was living at 1459 Robson Street.

The business was still in the same location in 1919, although the directory did not have a residential address for J. S. Bernet.

After 1919, Joseph did not appear in the Vancouver directories.

 

Return to New York

In 1925 and 1930, Joseph and Hattie were living in New York City, along with their son, Alan.

Joseph died in New York on May 10, 1932.

Hattie and Alan were living in New York in 1940 when Alan registered with the United States military.

Joseph and Hattie had the following child.

 

Alan Joseph Bernet

Alan Joseph Bernet was born in Vancouver) on November 27, 1914.

In 1940, he was living with Hattie in New York, and he was the manager of a housing company.

He was later married to Charlotte.

Alan died in Wheaton, Illinois on January 24, 1987.

Vancouver Sun, February 17, 1913, page 7: “According to the New York Herald society news, Mr. Joseph S. Bernet, of Vancouver, announced his engagement to Miss Hattie Samuel Rosenbaum, of 911 Park avenue, New York City. Reception will be given at her home Sunday, February 17, 1913. Miss Rosenbaum is highly connected in New York society and her engagement was a great surprise to her friends. She is the niece and protégé of Mr. J. Fox, president of the Columbia bank of New York. Mr. J.S. Bernet is staying at the Vanderbilt hotel and will leave for Vancouver next Wednesday. He is the senior member of the firm of Bernet Brothers of this city. The wedding will take place sometime in April.”
