Several members of the Main family lived at 1823 Comox Street from 1908 to 1916.

 

Family Background

Alexander, Anne, James, Janet and Margaret Main were born in Nairn, Scotland. Their parents were Alexander Main (1829-1889) and Margaret Storm (1846–1875).

Alexander Main, Senior was a merchant in Nairn. (The surname “Main” was so common in the Nairn region that some families adopted nicknames or “tee-names” to distinguish themselves from other “Main” families. It isn’t clear that this family used a “tee-name.”)

James Main, the younger of the two brothers, arrived in Vancouver in the early 1890s. The other members of the Main family came in the early 1900s.

 

Alexander Main

Alexander Main was born in Nairn on August 22, 1868.

He arrived in Canada about 1906. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1906. He was living at 544 Westminster Avenue and working with his brother’s hardware firm, J. Main and Company.

Janet Main was born in Nairn on January 19, 1867.

James Main

James Main was born in Nairn on December 29, 1869.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1895. He was living at 812 Gore Avenue and working as a clerk with Thomas Dunn’s firm of ship chandlers and hardware merchants.

Anne Main

Anne Main was born in Nairn on October 11, 1873.

She trained as a nurse.

She arrived in Canada in 1902.

She first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. She was a nurse, and she was living at 1823 Comox Street.

She appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1912. She was living at 1823 Comox Street.

On June 5, 1912, in Vancouver, she married John Geddie Brown, who was a contractor. He was born in New Brunswick on about 1866. His parents were Robert Brown (born 1810) and Ann Noble (1823-1909).

After their marriage, John and Margaret lived at 1731 Balaclava Street.

Margaret died in Vancouver on December 22, 1920.

John died on December 13, 1943. He was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec.
