William Hepworth operated the English Bay Grocery at 1208 Denman Street from 1913 to 1920, and lived at that same address from 1913 to 1915.

 

Early Life in England

William Hepworth was born on March 12, 1881, in Leeds, Yorkshire. His parents were David Hepworth (born about 1836; died between 1881 and 1901) and Sarah Ann Rosindale (1841-1926).

In 1901, William was living with his mother in Armley, Yorkshire. He was working as a grocer’s assistant.

On December 26, 1903, in Leeds, William married Alice Bulmer Saunders. She was born in the United States on November 2, 1884. (In some sources she is called Alice Myrtle Bulmer.)

Travel to Canada

In April 1908, William and Alice sailed from England to Canada, along with their son, Arnold, and William’s mother, Sarah. They arrived in St. John, New Brunswick, and they were on their way to Fernie, British Columbia.

It appears that the Hepworths were in Fernie when a forest fire devastated the city in August 1908.

In 1910, William was a clerk with the Trites-Wood Company, which operated a department store in Fernie.

In 1910, he was on the list of provincial voters in the Fernie Electoral District.

 

Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was living at 1145 Burrard Street, and operating a grocery store at the same address. He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Alice died in Vancouver on December 28, 1918. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On February 11, 1920, in Vancouver, William married Esther Cushman. She was born in Toxteth Park, near Liverpool, England, in 1883. Her parents were William Cushman (1848–1911) and Mary Ramsay (1850-1911).

William did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1922.

In 1922, Esther went back to England to visit relatives. She returned to Canada in November 1922.

 

Sperling Station

By 1924, William was operating a general store at Sperling Station, which was on the British Columbia Electric Railway line, about 26 kilometres southwest of New Westminster. He was also the postmaster.

He continued to operate the general store and post office until 1943.

William and Esther were divorced in Vancouver on September 24, 1937.

William died in Vancouver on December 31, 1943. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

In 1945, Arthur Harold Woolley (1912-1971) was operating the general store at Sperling. His wife, Doris Mae Woolley (née Williams), was the postmistress.

William and Alice had the following children.

 

Arnold James Hepworth

Arnold James Hepworth was born in Leeds, England, on December 10, 1904.

He worked for a time as a grocery clerk. Later he was a shipper for Woodward Stores.

On March 9, 1929, in Vancouver, he married Mary Ellen May. She was born in Oil City, Ontario, on August 18, 1903. Her parents were William Henry May (1858-1936) and Harriet Ann Hodder (1861-1943).

This married ended in divorce in Vancouver on November 19, 1943. Mary later married William McKillop. Mary died in Vancouver on September 16, 1963.

After his divorce from Mary Ellen May, Arnold married Mary Kober.

Arnold died in Vancouver on March 17, 1983. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary Kober Hepworth died on January 1, 1997. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Irene Alice Hepworth

Irene Alice Hepworth was born in Vancouver on January 17, 1918.

On March 16, 1940, in Sperling, she married Harry Dibble Green, who was a demonstrator of saws for sawmills. He was born in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, on September 3, 1912. His parents were Dibble Harry Green (1876-1920) and Alice Stewart.

Irene died in Langley, British Columbia on May 4, 1981.

Harry died in Langley on September 19, 1992.
