In the 1900 United States census, Allan and Sylvia were living in Spokane, Washington, where Allan was working as a jeweller.

In the 1901 Canada census, Allan was living in a boarding house in Rossland, British Columbia. He was a jeweller.

By 1905, Allan and Sylvia had moved to Vancouver. Allan’s jewellery store opened in Vancouver on December 2, 1905.

On the evening of February 10, 1906, only two months after the store opened, a robber smashed the front window and stole gold rings and loose diamonds. The police recovered the bulk of the stolen goods. The robbers, Wallace W. Barrington and Harry Hassard (also known as “Harry MacHold”), pleaded guilty. Mr. Barrington was sentenced to five years in prison; Mr. Hassard received a four-year sentence.

The jewellery store continued in business on Hastings Street until 1911. On September 14, 1911, the Vancouver Province advertised a close-out sale: “McMillan’s Doors Will Soon Close . . .The Passing of a Great Store That Carried Splendid Lines.” According to the advertisement, there were plans for an eight-storey building to go up on the site, which prompted the need for “a mighty and hurried surrender.” The eight-storey building never appeared; the original building was still standing in 2016 (although much-altered on the outside, and probably on the inside).

Allan and Sylvia had moved into 1974 Barclay Street about 1908. In 1912, Allan hired J.H. Tolman and Company to make alterations to the Barclay Street house.
