James first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. He was living at 863 Homer Street, and he was working as a salesman for Henry Darling, whose firm manufactured paints and oils.

On January 20, 1916, in Vancouver, James signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. (He gave his date of birth as August 8, 1875, eight years later than his actual birth.) He served in France for about 18 months. He was discharged from the military on February 7, 1919, because of medical unfitness.

In the early 1920s he was a clerk with the Department of Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment (sometimes called the “S.C.R.”).

By 1930 he was a clerk with the pensions department. He retired about 1933.

In 1948 James and Marion were living at 960 Jervis Street.

James died in Vancouver on April 19, 1948.

Marian died in Vancouver on December 30, 1955.

James and Marion had the following children.

 

Dorothy Marion Hunter

Dorothy Marion Hunter was born in West Derby, Lancashire, England, on July 19, 1896.

Dorothy married Peter Murray Elder in Vancouver on September 4, 1915. He was a druggist. He was born in Hensall, Ontario, on October 24, 1885. His parents were William Elder and Margaret Logie. (This marriage ended in divorce in New Westminster, British Columbia, on May 29, 1936. Peter later re-married. He died in Kamloops, British Columbia, on October 26, 1952.)

Dorothy never remarried.

She died in Vancouver on May 29, 1960.

 

William Herbert Hunter

On April 25, 1918, in Vancouver, he signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He was discharged on February 7, 1919, under the general demobilization.

He worked as a rate analyst at British Columbia Telephones.

He never married.

He died in Vancouver on October 24, 1962.
