John Hardwick Davis was born in Surrey, England, on August 18, 1841.
His parents were John Davis and Mary Ann Cock (or Cook), who were married in Horselydown on November 7, 1836. John Davis was born in Chertsey, Surrey about 1799, and he became a clergyman.
Early Life
John went to St. Paul’s School in London, England.
Later he studied at St. Alban Hall, which was associated with Merton College at the University of Oxford.
Marriage to Florence Harriette Mordacque
On April 14, 1879, in Withington, Lancashire, John married Florence Harriette Tupper, who was the widow of Henry Delisle Tupper.
Florence was born in Lancashire on September 13, 1857. Her father was Rev. Louis Henry Mordacque (1824-1870).
Florence’s mother was Sarah Robertson.
After Rev. Mordaque’s death, Sarah married Rev. George Perkins.
Florence’s first marriage was to Henry Delisle Tupper on May 31, 1877, in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. Henry died on June 7, 1878, at Bon Accord, Mount Row, Guernsey.
John Hardwick Davis in Scotland and British Columbia
In 1885, John was a clergyman at Taymouth, Kenmore, in Perth, Scotland.
In the late 1880s, the Davis family came to British Columbia. They lived on Vancouver Island, near Nanaimo.
In 1897, John became the vicar at Sapperton and Ladner.
In 1902, John and Florence moved to Vancouver.
Florence died in Vancouver on December 20, 1903. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
John went back to England, and he lived in Malvern, Worcestershire.
In 1905, in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire, he married Marie Louise Swift.
In 1911, John and Marie were living at “Tully Allan” on Carlton Road in Malvern.
John died in January 1913. He was buried in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Louise died on July 20, 1915. She was buried in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
John and Florence had the following children.
Ian Gordon Davis
Ian Gordon Davis was born in Scotland (possibly Aberfeldy), on December 15, 1879.
In December 1909, he became engaged to Florence Lilo Cuthbertson (who was often known as “Lilo Cuthbertson”).
(It appears that this marriage did not take place. On September 8, 1926, in Port Haney, British Columbia, Lilo married Henry (“Harry”) Ellis Hanwell, who was a railroad construction superintendent. Harry died in Victoria, British Columbia on May6, 1953. Lilo died in Saanichton, British Columbia on March 31, 1980.)
On September 20, 1923, in Vancouver, In Davis married Elsie Victoria Cooksley. She was born on October 27, 1897, in Birtle, Manitoba. Her parents were William Cooksley and Jane Elizabeth Scavington.

Ian and Elsie had a son named Beverly Ian Davis (1925-2018). On July 17, 1948, in Vancouver, he married Shirley Mae Boyd.
He died on July 18, 2018.
John Gordon Davis
John Gordon Davis was born in Aberfeldy, Scotland, on December 15, 1882.
In 1901, he was living with his parents in New Westminster, British Columbia.
He worked as a machinist.
In April 1902, he enlisted with the Canadian Mounted Rifles to serve with the British forces in South Africa.
In 1947, the War Veterans Allowance board was reviewing his service in South Africa.
No further information is available for him.
Florence Edith Davis
Florence Edith Davis was born in Aberfeldy, Scotland, on December 19, 1883.
On September 21, 1904, in Vancouver, she married Basil John Jayne, who was an accountant. He was born in Llanelly, Breconshire, Wales, on March 6, 1871. His parents were Basil John Jayne and Julia Clara Thompson.
Basil later became the manager of the law firm of Robertson, Douglas and Symes. He died in West Vancouver on January 17, 1940.
Florence died on February 12, 1970 in Ireland.
She was buried in Portumna, Galway, Ireland.
Basil and Florence had the following children: Francis Basil Jayne (1906-1906); Charles Basil Jayne (1911-1989); and Viven Ethel Jayne (1921-2014).
Gavin Hardwick Davis
Gavin Hardwick Davis was born in Aberfeldy, Scotland, on January 16, 1885 (one source says 1881).
In 1911, he was living in Vancouver and working as an office clerk. He later worked as a broker.
In September 1914, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.
He later became a mining engineer.
In July 1947, in Saanichton, British Columbia, he married Marguerite McGraw, who was a school teacher. She was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on December 1, 1895. Her parents were Robert and Ellen McGraw.
Marguerite died in Powell River, British Columbia, on August 3, 1949.
Gavin died in Victoria, British Columbia, on April 26, 1978.
Winnifred Davis
Winnifred Davis was born in Aberfeldy, Scotland, on January 12, 1886.
On August 2, 1905, in Vancouver, she married Edward Howard Howard-Gibbon, who was a transportation agent. He was born on September 14, 1881, in Penetanguishine, Ontario. His father was Charles Stewart Gibbon. His mother was Florence Lambe.
This marriage ended in divorce. (Edward later married Elizabeth Edith Stephen. Edward died in Williams Lake, British Columbia, on November 25, 1963. Elizabeth died in Williams Lake on February 17, 1978.)
On March 4, 1920, in Vancouver, Winnifred married Arthur Holmes Pigott, who was the manager of Victoria Vancouver Stevedoring Company. He was born on May 16, 1868, in Liverpool, England. His parents were John Pigott and Mary Jane Waters.
Arthur died in Saanich, British Columbia on April 15, 1932.
Winifred died in Saanich on April 6, 1967.
Sarah Mordacque Davis
Sarah Mordacque Davis was born in Aberfeldy, Scotland, on September 8, 1888.
On October 10, 1911, in Vancouver, she married William Arthur Jukes Marshall, who was an accountant. He was born in St. Catherines, Ontario, on February 28, 1880. His parents were Paul Henry Marshall and Susan Ann Jukes.
William later became a purchasing agent for Canadian Exploration Company.
William died in Vancouver on December 14, 1947. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Sarah died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 16, 1977.
William and Sarah had a son, William Mordacque Marshall. He was born about 1914, and he died on October 7, 2007.

Davie [sic] and family will have the sincere sympathy of the community in the death of Mrs. Davie, which occurred early yesterday morning. Deceased had not been in good health for several years, but it is only during the past few weeks that her illness assumed a grave nature. Mrs. Davie, formerly Miss Florence Mordacque of Guernsey, Channel Islands, married Rev. J.H. Davie, who at that time was chaplain to the Earl of Breadalbane.
